Estelle arched an eyebrow at the man’s words, her voice dry and detached. “So in the end, you’re just using love as an excuse for your recklessness.”

Jonathan grinned at her. “Of course. I never fight a battle I’m not sure I’ll win.”

Gabriel leaned back into the sofa, glancing between the two of them with a stony face. “Is this really appropriate, having this conversation right in front of me?”

A faint blush crept up Estelle’s ears, but she leaned back as well, tilting her head until it rested gently on Gabriel’s shoulder. Her tone was clear and steady. “No matter what you decide to do, I’ll always understand and support you, big brother.”

Jonathan watched her, knowing how rare it was for Estelle to let anyone get this close. Seeing her resting on Gabriel’s shoulder told him just how much she cared.

He didn’t say anything, but his brows knit together in concern.

Gabriel turned to Estelle. “Someone here is jealous of your brother, you know. Maybe you should worry about his feelings?”

Estelle shot Jonathan a sidelong glance. “I’m not worried. He can learn to deal with it.”

Gabriel’s lips twitched with a brief smile as he gave her shoulder a reassuring pat. “I’m a grown man, not so easily hurt. It’s late. Go on, head home with Jonathan.”

Estelle understood he needed some space. She nodded. “If you can give Sylvia what she needs, I’ll back you all the way to win her back.”

With that, she stood up and looked at Jonathan. “Let’s go.”

She wanted to let her brother have some time to himself.

Jonathan rose, taking Estelle’s hand. He turned to Gabriel, his tone cool. “The Winters family is complicated. From top to bottom, everyone’s always weighing their own interests.”

Gabriel raised an eyebrow, but Jonathan was already leading Estelle away.

Gabriel remained where he was, staring out the window as the night winds picked up, the storm outside reflected in his storm-dark eyes.
