During dinner, Sylvia acted as if nothing had changed, but Eugene could still see through her mask.
She wore a calm, easy-going smile, pretending that everything was as it always had been.
He played along, as if nothing had happened, telling her about the odd clients he’d met at work and sharing funny stories from the office—anything to fill the silence. He talked about the people around him, about trivial things, trying to keep the mood light.
Sylvia listened intently, but every now and then, her gaze would drift, her mind clearly elsewhere.
After they finished eating, Eugene suggested they see a movie.
Sylvia shook her head. “I’m a bit tired tonight. Maybe another time.”
Eugene nodded, ever considerate. “Of course. We’ll go whenever you feel up for it.”
He drove her home. After she got out of the car, Eugene watched her walk away, her figure swallowed by the night. Suddenly, panic welled up inside him. “Sylvia!”
She turned around. “What is it?”
Separated by darkness, Eugene gazed at her, unable to hide his longing. “Nothing. Get some rest, okay? I’ll be thinking of you.”
She smiled gently. “Drive safe.”
Turning away, she climbed the stairs. When she finally closed the door behind her, leaning against it, the smile faded from her face. Only in the quiet of her own space could she let go, her whole body feeling drained, as if some invisible weight had left her exhausted.
She stayed there for a while before pushing herself upright, slipping off her coat, and heading inside.
She didn’t bother turning on the lights. Moving through the dark, she grabbed her pajamas, went to the bathroom to shower, and afterward, took a can of beer from the fridge, settling onto the balcony.
She popped it open, only to remember—too late—the doctor’s warning to avoid alcohol for the time being.
Sighing, she set the beer aside, a hollow feeling settling in her chest as if she’d lost her last bit of comfort.
She’d always loved the nights in River City—the choice to enjoy the peace and quiet, with the vibrant city lights just behind her, close enough to touch if she only turned around.
