Chapter 4

Coming out of the tattoo shop, it was already evening.

I got along well with the boss’s wife, and we exchanged contact information and added each other on WhatsApp.

When I was going home, I passed by a small stall selling cotton candy.

I couldn’t help but stop my steps.

The last time I ate it seems like it was when I was a child. At that time, my grandmother had not passed away yet. She would give me all her spare change when I couldn’t resist the temptation of cotton candy and couldn’t walk anymore.

She always watched me finish eating, and then she would laugh and scold me, saying “You greedy girl.”

My grandmother always liked to watch me smile.

The old face that used to laugh, with wrinkles growing deeper.

The cold wind brushed past, scattering memories.

I walked up to the stall and bought a cotton candy with a rabbit pattern.

It was very sweet.

Just as sweet as I remembered it.

Passing by the street corner, I heard a little girl asking loudly, “Mom, look, that lady is so cool! But why is she eating cotton candy?”

“Wasn’t that something for children to eat?”

Mom smiled and explained, “Who says marshmallows are only for children? Everyone can have them. Eating some sweets makes people happier.” I walked in high heels.

I heard the sweet and childish voice of the little girl again, “But Auntie, why does it seem like you’re not happy at all even though you ate such a sweet cotton candy?”

“Mom, Auntie looked so lonely…”

The sound grew distant.

When I got home, the cotton candy was all gone, leaving only sticky hands.

I entered the door and washed my hands.

I received a call from Quinten.

He seemed drunk.

“Kierra.”

“You said.”

He chuckled on the other end of the phone, “Only seven more days, you’ll be marrying me.” “Tomorrow, shall I take you to choose a wedding dress?” “You decide, you know my size.

I faintly heard a girl’s coquettish voice coming from the other end of the phone, “Quinten, let me accompany you to try on wedding dresses. Don’t you want to see how I look in a wedding dress?”

Quinten’s voice was hoarse, “Okay.”

Ijust didn’t know if he was responding to me or to the girl next to me.

Woke up from a nap.

I heavily crossed out the date of yesterday on the calendar.

I changed clothes, washed up, and put on makeup.

I was feeling a bit unwell, with pain all over my body, but I managed to hold on. In the dressing mirror, a woman was wearing the short skirt that Quinten hated the most, revealing her slender limbs. She had a calm smile on her face, finally able to make peace with all the unsightly scars, big and small, on her body.
