A Divorce He Regrets (Alissa Nexus) novel Chapter 171

ALEXANDER

Dominic paced round the room, his steps heavy with frustration, and Eliza's voice could be heard from the other room, shrill and insistent. I tried to shut it out, but it wasn't possible. The woman had a way of getting inside your skin so that it felt like your nerves were frayed.

"She's already acting like she's married to you," I muttered, standing with my arms folded and leaning against the wall. "It's disgusting.”

Dominic's jaw clenched. "You think I don't know that? I hate this as much as anybody."

"Then why are you letting it happen?" I bit out, my voice rising.

He quit his pacing and took a step towards me. His face turned dark. “Because I need to keep her close. If I let her go, she’ll run to the media, and the Graham name will be dragged through the mud. With Grandpa gone, we can’t afford that kind of scandal.”

I shook my head, aggravated. "That's not a good reason, Dominic. Keeping her at your house-around Faith and Caleb is wrong. You're punishing your wife for nothing."

Dominic let out a breath, wiping his hand across the top of his hair. "I know it's not great, but what am I supposed to do? Faith doesn't get it.”

"Obviously she doesn't−" I bemoaned. "How could she? You're putting the woman who told you she was pregnant with your baby under the same roof as her. How do you think that looks to her?"

Dominic glared at me, but I did not back down. "Look," I said, my tone firm, "one thing I do know about Eliza is that the more you rise to her bait, the stronger she becomes. She feeds off your exasperation. Stop letting her win."

"I'm not letting her win," Dominic snapped, but a hesitant flicker crossed his voice.

"You are," I said. "And it's going to cost you everything if you don't stop. Faith just had a baby, Dominic. Do you know what that kind of stress can do to her? She could fall into depression. She's already dealing with enough."

“This is so fucked up.” Dominic muttered, his shoulders drooped. "I hate this," he mumbled.

"Then do something about it," I said. "Focus on Faith. Show her that she's your priority. Eliza might be in your house, but that doesn't mean you have to let her ruin your marriage."

He let out a heavy sigh, his frustration palpable. "You're right," he admitted reluctantly.

"I know I'm right," I said, my voice a little softer now. "Don't make the same mistake that I did. Don't let the woman you love slip away because of your pride or some misguided sense of duty."

Dominic didn't say anything for a moment, but I could practically see the gears in his head turning. He knew that I was right, even if he didn't want to admit it.
