A Divorce He Regrets (Alissa Nexus) novel Chapter 212

RAINA

Vanessa looked at me like I had lost my mind. Her eyes were wide, and disbelief written all over her face as she shook her head, pacing up and down the room like she was trying to process what I had just said. She flung her to her temples, the fingers digging into her skin as though physically keeping herself from screaming.

Then she stopped and turned to me, and absolutely exploded.

"Are you insane?" she demanded, her voice sharp, raw with frustration.

I clenched my jaw, already tired of hearing that question. Everyone kept treating me like I was reckless, like I wasn't thinking straight, but that wasn't true. I was the only one thinking clearly.

"Why does everyone keep asking me that?" I shot back, crossing my arms over my chest. "This is about Faith. She's out there, and from where I'm standing, I'm the only one actually doing something about it."

Vanessa blew out an angry breath, her face a mask of anger and fear. "And if you get hurt?" she exclaimed. "What then? How the hell is Alex supposed to forgive me?"

Panic gripped me before I could even think, my heart slamming against my ribs. I lunged forward, pressing my hand over her mouth with a firm touch, my pulse roaring in my ears. "Shh," I hissed. "Do you want them to hear?"

Her eyes widened with alarm, but after a second, she nodded. I hesitated before pulling my hand away, watching her closely.

"I'm not asking you to come with me," I said, my voice low but urgent. "I just need you to help me get out of here. That's it."

Vanessa still looked like she wanted to shake some sense into me, her jaw tight, shoulders tense.

Then, just as I expected, she shook her head furiously. "No. No way. Alex would kill me."

I didn't even hesitate. I dropped to my knees, not caring how pathetic that made me look

The Cold, smooth floor pressed into my skin, but I hardly felt it. I locked eyes with Vanessa, letting her see just how desperate I was. My pride didn't matter right now. Humiliation didn't matter. Nothing did except getting her to understand. My voice was raw and thick with emotion as I begged, "Please, Vanessa. Faith was kidnapped because of me. If it weren't for me, she wouldn't be in this mess." My throat constricted, but I pushed through. "Nathan's not going to let her go. You know that as well as I do."

Vanessa looked at me, and for a moment, I thought she was going to deny it again. Her lips parted like she was going to protest, to spew out another reason why this was a terrible idea. But then she paused, her jaw tensing as battle crossed her face.

I could see it happening. The moment she caved.
