Lance recalled, “Abbot said the battle was extremely fierce back then. It was urgent, and with Dragon Ash launching a surprise night raid and burning the military camp, casualties were heavy

“The soldiers‘ bodies were buried in pits. Many were burnt beyond recognition.”

“Abbot identified Eugene because he saw him fighting in the flanes and then being kicked back into the fire when injured. But Abbot was caught up in the intense battle himself, Adelaide said.

“It’s possible Eugene crawled out when Abbot wasn’t looking and was captured,” she added.

“There’s a chance,” Lance nodded seriously.

Adelaide thought of Eugene’s mother, Sibyl. Since Eugene’s sacrifice, she had stayed indoors.

At the last birthday party, her appearance was a huge blow to Sibyl.

If Eugenius was Eugene, then…

But Eugenius was now captured by Dragon Ash and had likely endured much torture.

Adelaide hoped Tad could stall the negotiations to buy Eugenius time for rescue.

“Hope he’s safe. Regardless of whether he’s Eugene, he’s contributed greatly to reclaiming the southern border. He must return safely,” Adelaide said, her heart heavy with the uncertainty of war.

Lance decided, “I can’t wait. I’ll leave the city tonight to avoid unexpected issues.”

He knew Tad’s temperament was unpredictable, Dragon Ash sought to exchange Eugenius for a city, and while Lycan Erasmus hadn’t refused, Tad would likely decline.

Lance feared Tad’s outright rejection might prompt Dragon Ash to execute Eugenius.

That night, Lance set out with Tommy and Caldwell.

Meanwhile, an encrypted message was sent to the Warscar Training Camp–Lance needed to seek Klein’s help.

After Lance left, Paisley stayed with Adelaide in the adjacent room, concerned she might feel lonely.

Adelaide playfully tapped Paisley’s head. “I’m not lonely at all. You’re just bored, aren’t you? Why not visit Avery?”

“No way. He’s all pompous now as the captain of the wolf pack guard, strutting around like a proud rooster,” Paisley said, lying on the bed with her hands under her cheeks.

“I’m not really bored. I just want to chat with you. In a couple of days, we’ll go see the spectacle–Sabrina’s being sent to the Glenveil Pack as a breeder.”

Adelaide, hands behind her head, replied, “I know about that. I’m thinking of something else.”

“Thinking about Wanda’s meltdown?” Paisley turned her head, her face full of mischief.

“Not exactly. I’m also keeping an eye on the Soulrend Pack situation, Adelaide said.

Paisley kicked her legs playfully. “Dwight and Willow were living it up a few days ago. Wonder if they’ll cr their eyes out after losing their inheritance.”

Adelaide offered a faint smile. “Who knows?”

Giggles escaped Paisley. “You don’t laugh much these days.”

Paisley tapped her forehead and said, “You gotta cheer up. There’s drama to watch, jokes to hear, and someone to kick around.”

Adelaide turned to look at her. “Paisley, I have a question for you. Suppose we were on the battlefield, and you were mated. But you were reported ‘killed in action‘–though you weren’t really dead, just captured. When you returned and found your mate had re–mated, would you be heartbroken and furious?”

Paisley pondered. “Can’t really put myself in those shoes. I don’t have a mate. You do. Imagine how you’d feel.”
