Chapter 9

Clifford rushed into the hospital to find Tanta sitting up in bed, her eyes eary. “Tania” He quickly pulled her into his arms, mmuting to calm her.

“I hurts,” she whimpered as her tears fell, soaking through his suit jacket in seconds.

“Mr. Jones, 1 was at the mall trying to pickout ate for you, and then I slipped and fell.” She began to sob while shakly saying, “I’m so sorry. If I lose this baby, I’ll have failed you and Isabelle…”

“It’s okay, It’s ok.” He gently stroked her swollen belly with one hand white the other carefully wiped her tears. His touch was even more tender now.

“The baby’s fine. He’s doing great. Don’t worry.”

Tania put on her most fragile expression. “Mr. Jones, I know I only got to stay by your side this long because I’m carrying your child. That’s the only reason I get to be taken care of like this.

“Mr. Jones, actually.” she passed, her voice trembling, “I’ve admited you for a long time, that’s why I didn’t hesitate to go to you when you were drugged that night”

She clutched his hand tightly. “And that’s why I didn’t care that I was pregnant and ran straight to help you wher w you in danger that day. Mr. Jones–no, Clifford you accept me?”

Her careful, delicate manner only made Chifferd feel more on edge. He pushed her away but couldn’t bring himself to get angry.

“Tania, once you’ve had the baby, I’ll make sure you’re taken care of. I’ll give you enough money to live comfortably abroad for the rest of your life.” His expression turned cold and unreadable as he said that

“Clifford, none of that matters to me. What if the only thing I want is you? Sensing his hesitation, Tania grabbed his hand again and placed it over her heart. “ Clifford, please don’t push me away.”

He let out a heavy breath. For some reason, all he could think about was Tessa. “No. No. ” he muttered, panicked, pulling his hand back as he walked toward the door. ‘Tania, you know my heart belongs to Tessa”

“But Isabelle really likes me. She even said that if I have a boy, you should give me a title. Tania was as pale as a sheet now, gasping between sobs on the hospital

The question hit Clifford like a punch to the gut. He froze. “Tania, no matter what Grandma promised you back then, the only person I love is Tessa. You’d better take care of yourself.”

“Maybe it’s just because of the baby,” he told himself, trying to rationalize it as he drove back to the office.

Here self into work, burying himself in tasks, because that was easier than facing his own heart, easier than dealing with the version of himself from the past, who would never forgive what he’d become.
