A Night To Remember novel (Diane and Norman) novel Chapter 25

Chapter 25 Is He Asleep, or Is He Unwilling to Talk to Me

Diane was no match for Elizabeth’s sturdy physique with her dainty figure, but now that she had divorced Elizabeth’s son, she wouldn’t let Elizabeth pick on her like this. Therefore, she put up her hands and fiercely fended Elizabeth off when the latter swung her arm at her. “Watch your mouth. What you said today is sufficient for me to sue you for insult and slander,” she replied coldly and sternly while wrenching her arm free of Elizabeth’s grip.

“How dare you sue me… I should be the one suing you! I’ll sue you for cuckolding my son!” Elizabeth shouted at the top of her voice. Luckily, it was already past office hours, so no one saw what was happening here except for a security guard.

Diane was inwardly simmering with rage, but she wasn’t in the mood to argue with Elizabeth. As such, she merely gave the older woman a careless shove. “Get out of my way. I don’t have time to talk rubbish with you. You want money, don’t you? Just go to Evergreen Incorporated and ask Christopher if you can.” Who would have the nerve to go to Christopher—Elizabeth, her son, or Stella? she thought to herself while taking a step forward.

Elizabeth clenched her teeth and glared at Diane before she threw herself at the latter again. “Stop right there! You’re the one who committed adultery, so you’re the one I’ll go to!” She stared fixedly at Diane like a blood-sucking leech.

This former mother-in-law of Diane’s had been dominating since forever. At that time, Diane still wanted to put some serious effort into her marriage with Norman, so she naturally tolerated this unreasonable old woman with the greatest kindness. However, she had run out of patience right now. She didn’t bother saying a word more than necessary, and she shook off Elizabeth’s hand with all her might before giving Elizabeth a hard push with her palm.

She just wanted to shove Elizabeth out of her way at first, but to her surprise, Elizabeth plonked herself down onto the ground after taking two steps back.

“Ouch!” Elizabeth shouted in a cadenced voice. “This is outrageous! Someone is killing her mother-in-law!” she wailed and narrowed her eyes with one hand on her waist and the other slapping the floor.

Diane stood next to the revolving door while staring at Elizabeth. On the other hand, the security guard near them looked at Diane before he eventually rushed to Elizabeth’s side and tried to pull her up. “Please get up, granny. Don’t sit here any longer, for we’ll be closing in a minute.”

“How should I get up when I can’t? No, my back was sprained during the fall. I can’t move anymore,” Elizabeth complained. As she spoke, she surprisingly broke free of the security guard’s grasp and lay face down on the ground at once. “I had this fall in your company, so you guys must take responsibility for it! Don’t think of getting yourself out of this, Diane,” she bawled at Diane while lying on the floor, and it was clear that she wanted to make a scene.

The security guard was stumped by this, and he looked at Diane whose temples were throbbing as well.

Elizabeth used to be a revolutionary during the Revolution Period, so she had an astonishing capacity for making fracas. Diane didn’t want to care about this unreasonable scoundrel, but they were now in the company’s building. If she paid no heed to what was happening, she would bring her company into trouble and land the security guard in hot water.

After staring at Elizabeth for a while, she fished her cell phone from her handbag and spoke. “Hello, is this 911? We have someone creating a disturbance here…”

“You *sshole! How dare you call the police?” When she heard that Diane was calling the police, Elizabeth turned over at once in extremely agile movements. However, instead of rising to her feet, she merely sat on the ground and glared at Diane. After her eyes flickered for a moment, she suddenly lay face down on the floor again. “All right, you may call the police—I’m not afraid even if the policemen come. How can they watch a senior citizen like me being bullied? There are laws in this land, aren’t there?” she shouted in a self-justifying manner.

Diane made no response to Elizabeth, though. She merely looked at the security guard and said, “Let’s wait for the police.”

What the policeman said was very much to the point, and Diane was silent for a while before she nodded. “Okay, I’ll try to contact my family.”

The policeman then turned around and left, whereas Diane stayed in the interrogation room for a long time before she fished out her cell phone and dialed Christopher’s number. It was such a late hour, yet he hadn’t called to ask why she wasn’t home yet. She wasn’t sure if he was outside or at home, but after hesitating for a long time, she felt that he was the only person she could turn to at this moment.

All her friends had probably gone to bed. Besides, they were ordinary people, so they could do nothing if they came and ran into such a heavy-going and unreasonable family. What about her family? George, her father, had just been discharged from hospital and was recuperating at home, whereas her mother and younger sister couldn’t be counted on at all with that consistent attitude of theirs. At this moment, she had no choice but to count on Christopher, her husband in name only.

As she thought of this, Diane found this somewhat ironic. Wasn’t it ironic that she could only count on Christopher right now because she couldn’t count on her own family? However, she had to count on him despite the irony of the situation.

Beep… Diane had her heart in her mouth as her cell phone beeped a few times. She was somewhat nervous, for she was unsure of how Christopher would react.

Beep… The cell phone kept on ringing, but there was never a response from the other end of the line.

As the cell phone beeped again and again, Diane’s heart sank little by little. Is he asleep, or is he unwilling to talk to me at all?
