Chapter ThirtyNine

The group of people proceeded to onder brunch and eat while having mundene conversations about the weather, the traffic of New York and the various estates everyone wished they could retire to Matteo remained silent for the duration of the meal and kept his eyes trained forward. He barely spared her a glance as he ate and listened to everyone around them. She found herself growing angrier because of his behavior and the meeting he’d suckered her into By the end of the meal, Genevieve was certain everyone could feel the combined tension radiating off the two of them.

Matteo excused himself to use the bathroom, leaving her standing alone while the rest of the party shared elevators down. She leaned against the wall, her foot tapping while she glared across the hall at Leo who did everything in his power to avoid looking at her.

Did you know what this meeting was really about?” she asked.

Leo shrugged.

Lee is paid to make sure you stay out of danger, not give advice or be used as a soapbox. Matteo said, walking back up to them.

Genevieve swiveled to face him. Who is paid to keep you out of danger, Mr. Accardi because I sense some coming for you.

Matteo raised a brow. He turned his gaze to Leo who shoved off the wall.

I’ll meet you at

meet you at the car,Leo sighed.

T’ll come

with you,Gen said, walking toward the elevators.

At the last moment, Matteo grabbed her by the upper arm and directed her toward the other elevator.

You’re not getting out of this,Matteo hissed under his breath as she struggled to get out of his grasp. He pushed her r into the elevator, causing her to stumble and catch herself on the railing.

Genevieve huffed in frustration and pivoted around. Her eyes became fixed on the closing doors. She jumped to try to get to them in time when his arm wrapped around her waist, hauling her backward. He pushed her up against the wall as the doors closed. His hands tightened against her and she could feel the sweat accumulating along his palms. The elevator dropped and his lips sealed over hers. Genevieve’s struggle died immediately. She wrapped her arms around his neck and he groaned into her mouth. The elevator dinged as it dropped through the air toward the lobby much faster than it had ascended. His movements became rougher with each ding

Matteo’s mouth was savage as he nipped and bit her exposed skin. His free hand hiked up her skirt, exposing her thighs. She felt air against her ass and gasped. She could feel his smile against her neck. His hand gripped her ass check hard.

Tuck, don’t call me that now,he warned.

He stood back, gripped the fabric of her shirt and pulled. Gen stilled as buttons flew. She looked down at her ripped blouse and then back up at him. His face was blank as he stared down at the white lace bustier. His hands shook as he caressed the fabric beneath her breasts. Her lids fluttered closed at his gentle touch.

The elevator announced they were almost at the lobby.

Dammit, Gen.Matteo groaned. He stepped back, pulled her shirt tight and tucked it into her skirt.

He shifted their positions so she stood near the door and he leaned back against the railing. The doors opened and she blinked at the blinding light filtering in through the lobby windows, Luckily Leo and the other men were nowhere to be seen. She walked on unsteady legs toward the entrance, With each step. her sanity returned as did the anger from the situation on the roof. By the time she reached the sidewalk she was fuming again. She wrenched the passenger door open and slid inside.

Leo, keys,Matteo ordered. You and Alexander can catch a ride with Frankie and Marco.

What?Gen seethed.

Leo threw Matteo the keys as he sauntered around the car, Gen went to hop out when Matteo’s hand caught her wrist and pulled her back inside. He reached around her with his other hand and closed the door. He revved the engine and peeled off before she could get any ideas about hurling herself out onto the sidewalk. With that no longer an option, she crossed her arms and glared out the window.

Why are you the one who’s upset? Matteo growled. You’re the one who crossed the line you painted.

Me?!

Yes, you. Or did I pass out and hallucinate you grabbing my……

It was an important meeting! You said so yourself! You were a sweaty, scared little mess. I had to do something. You are the one who involved me in

business you promised to not involve me in!

Matteo scoffed and tightened his knuckles along the steering wheel. I had to involve you to keep you from getting involved.

What are you talking about?!

I can’t tell you everything.

Then tell me something. Why was it so important for me to be there?

I needed to protect you,

Matteo growled, You think I wanted you sitting next to him?

Maybe not as much as you

Matteo’s eyes darkened. He glared over at her. Are you serious?

The car screeched to a halt and she glanced out the window to see they’d arrived back at the office, ten went for the done but his hand wrapped around her wrist before she could. Gen closed her eyes, refusing to lick at him.

One has brought me to my knees. One has broken my heart by walking away. Do not question your importance to me Helping my cousins means acain. O’Brien wanted my track and until two days ago I meant to say no. Matters have changed. My track means fuck all to me. fuck all to me. But you and your safetyStating you are nane while he needed something from me was the best way I knew how to protect you. I won’t involve you again, Genevieve. But know thisif you ever touch me again like you did in that elevator, I won’t be able to stop. Not even if the whole Goddamned office pulls up a chair. This is your only warning.Gen kept her eyes closed as she tried to calm her racing heart. I need some form of

acknowledgement.

Cen gave two quick nods. He released her wrist and she wrenched the car door open. Leo was waiting just outside. He did his trademark eyebrow raise as he saw her expression. He bent down to give Matteo the same questioning look. She didn’t know if Matteo gave anything away. She kept her hand fisted in her blouse as she wondered what she was going to do for the rest of the day. She hurried into the building and asked the people in the elevator to hold it for her. As the doors slowly closed she watched Matteo walk into the lobby, his eyes pinning her with an unspoken challenge.
