Chapter 46 Fate of the Kendricks
Freddy paused, glancing at Adrian Winthrop, who was standing nearby.
He hesitated, unsure if telling the story would change how others saw Annelise.
Annelise noticed his hesitation and gave him a small nod to continue.
Freddy lowered his voice. “My grandpa always said Isabella was a real upstart. The Whitman family wasn’t anything special until she came along. She started solving cases nobody else could. Maybe she got arrogant after all those suc- cesses. One time, both the Whitmans and the Kendricks had a patient at the same time. Isabella insisted on using tra- ditional medicine… and the patient didn’t make it.”
He leaned in, wary of anyone overhearing. “It was a scandal back then. If she hadn’t had some powerful friends in Brookford, she might’ve gone to jail. The Kendricks made sure she got kicked out of the Alliance. I never imagined your grandma was Isabella.”
Annelise looked up at him. “How else did I learn medicine? You think I was born with it?”
Freddy nodded sheepishly. “Fair enough.”
She shot him a look. “Who exactly were you calling arrogant?”
Freddy blurted out, “Me! It was me. I was arrogant.”
He’d seen Annelise floor Herbert with a single kick. The guy shouldn’t have been walking anytime soon.
It was odd, really. The guy seemed fine going home. This didn’t make sense.
Annelise tapped the invitation card in her hand, her voice level. “Forget it. Go prepare the dinner. It’s time to get din- ner started.”
She acted as if nothing had happened.
Meanwhile, Blaine took notice of the invitation in Annelise’s hand. He slipped up beside Adrian quietly. “Sir, I think Dr. Caldwell’s invitation is a fake.”
Blaine had handled the invitations himself, so he could spot a forgery instantly.
Adrian’s dark eyes narrowed. “Take the imitation out and slip a genuine one into her bag.”
“Yes, sir.” Blaine kept his voice low. “I didn’t expect Dr. Caldwell to attend the conference. Seems like fate keeps bringing her and you together.”
Adrian found the thought unexpectedly pleasing, rolling his rosary beads with a faint smile.
But Blaine wasn’t finished. “Sir, there’s something else. That story about her grandmother and the patient might actu-

ally be true.”
He wasn’t about to take chances with Adrian’s safety.
If Annelise learned medicine from her grandmother, chances were she might screw up.
Adrian fixed him with a cold look. “Blaine, this is the last time I want to hear gossip from you.”
Blaine straightened instantly, nearly dropping to his knees. “Understood! I apologize, sir.”
Adrian stopped him. “This isn’t the Winthrop’s mansion.”
With that, he went into the back courtyard.
Blaine’s heart was pounding. He didn’t dare say another word. Adrian had made his stance clear, and Blaine knew he needed to adapt to it.
Out in the yard, beneath the tree, a fire crackled with a pot set over it.
Isabella tried getting up to tend the fire, but Annelise pressed her back into the rocking chair. “Leave it to me, Grand- ma. I’ll handle the cooking tonight.”
Isabella looked surprised. “You? You’re picky enough when you eat. But can you even cook?”
Annelise handed her a drink, some snacks, and a fan. “I’ll give it a shot. Just sit back and tell me how to do it.”
Isabella burst into laughter. “Deal. Let’s see what you’re capable of.”
Annelise wasted no time. She set a board on the table, chopped up the pumpkin, slid it into the pot, and tossed in
some Poria.
She moved fast. While the soup bubbled, she had the main dish ready to go.
She rubbed the pot with garlic, which cleared the smell and left a mellow fragrance behind. And the moment onions hit the hot oil, the whole yard filled with the mouthwatering smell of sizzling meat…
