“Looks like everyone who’s supposed to be here has arrived, but someone showing up in that getup is seriously sketchy,” Jessica frowned, clearly skeptical.
A giant mascot suit.
You couldn’t see their face.
Not a word was spoken.
It was impossible not to be on guard.
Jeffrey was at a loss for words, just standing there in awkward silence.
‘Jeffrey still isn’t here,‘ Rebecca thought as she scanned the room, then added, “There’s still one person missing.”
“Who?” Jessica asked.
Ian leaned in, looking just as curious.
Rebecca glanced over at Samuel, hesitated, then finally spoke up, “Jeffrey.”
Jessica and Ian exchanged a look.
To be fair, Jeffrey should really be here for Samuel’s fifth birthday–he is Samuel’s actual father, after all. But considering how tense things were when he and Rebecca split, would he really bother showing up?
“It’s me,” Jeffrey said at last, his voice still a bit distorted. “The gifts for you and Samuel have already been sent to the villa.”
Rebecca’s gaze softened for a moment.
Every birthday, Jeffrey used to prepare two gifts.
One for Samuel, one for her.
Even after the divorce, he still kept that habit.
“Why’d you show up in that getup?” Rebecca asked him calmly.
“You said after the divorce you didn’t want to see me anymore, so I do my best to stick to my word whenever I can,” Jeffrey said, totally sincere–no other motives behind it.
His first and foremost promise was always to keep Rebecca’s life peaceful and safe.
Not showing up in front of her was just something he promised on the side.
Whether he interfered in her life or not, well, that would depend on the circumstances.

If Stanley ever caught wind of this, he’d probably clap for Jeffrey himself–finally glad to see the guy learning how to be a little flexible.
“You don’t have to worry about that today,” Rebecca said calmly, surprised he was still so hung up on keeping his word. “Samuel’s over there playing with Riley. Go say hi to him.”
“Alright,” Jeffrey replied.
The next second, he pulled off the costume’s head, showing a face a bit more gaunt than before.
Lucky it was winter–otherwise, staying in that mascot suit so long would’ve straight–up cooked him alive.
“From now on, just get a birthday gift for Samuel. No need to prepare anything for me,” Rebecca said, bringing it up since she couldn’t think of anything else to say.
The less entanglement between her and Jeffrey, the better.
She worried that with his ongoing kindness, she might end up forgiving everything that happened in the past.
“We agreed on two gifts, and that’s how it’s going to stay,” Jeffrey insisted, his eyes–dark and unwavering- locking onto her in the midst of the bustling lawn. “Five years ago today, Samuel came into my life and brought me so much happiness. You went through all the pain to give birth to him, while I got to be his father without lifting a finger.”
Rebecca’s feelings were all tangled up inside.
Hearing him say that again, Rebecca’s heart couldn’t help but feel a little tangled up.
“This was supposed to be for the three of us,” Jeffrey said, pulling out a USB drive from his pocket. “But now, it makes more sense for you to have it.”
Rebecca took it, and she could already guess what was inside.
“Come on, let’s go. We haven’t taken that family pic for Samuel’s fifth birthday yet,” Jeffrey said, reaching his hand out to her.
Rebecca ignored his hand and walked straight toward Samuel.
Ever since Samuel was born, they’d always taken a family portrait together on his birthday. Even after the divorce, taking another one for Samuel to remember when he grows up wasn’t such a bad idea.
Rebecca walked ahead, and Jeffrey quietly followed behind.
Oddly enough, there was a quiet harmony between them.
“See that?” Jessica nudged fan once they were out of earshot. “You ought to take some pointers from Jeffrey. Every time I tell you to chase after Rebecca, you stick to your same old tricks. Try being the one in control for once–let Rebecca have a real choice.”
Ian was speechless.

Jessica kept teasing. “Bet if it were you, you’d just stand there and say your part–wouldn’t even go for her hand, right?”
lan was still speechless.
Like I could actually say yes to that… Ian thought bitterly.
“Jeffrey is way too sly,” Jessica scoffed, clearly still holding it against him from before. No matter what he did, she never seemed satisfied. “Next time, I need to warn Rebecca not to get swept along by his tricks.”
lan just kept his mouth shut.
Unusually, this was the one time he didn’t jump in with Jessica to badmouth Jeffrey. He just sat there quietly, not saying a word.
Jessica noticed and asked, “You okay?”
Jessica snorted, “Don’t tell me you’re really bothered by this.”
“I get where I went wrong,” Ian blurted out, his gaze following Rebecca and Jeffrey as they walked away. “And now I know why Becky hasn’t even thought about anyone else since her split.”
Jessica was totally confused.
‘Huh? What is he even talking about?‘ she thought.
She reached out, touched his forehead and teased, “What’s gotten into you?”
“Don’t you think Jeffrey’s actually more devoted to Becky than you ever were?” Ian said, looking dead serious for once–none of his usual playfulness.
Jessica shrugged. “Yeah, I know.”
In some ways, Jeffrey really does do better than me.
But so what?
“I’ll be Rebecca’s bestie for life, her ride–or–die friend who’ll never ditch her–no matter what, nobody could ever take my place in her heart.”
And in this, Jeffrey could never even come close.
“I always believed I could look after Becky better than anyone, be the best boyfriend there ever was,” lan said quietly, truly admitting defeat for once. “But now I get that I’ll never be good enough.”
Jessica paused, then got it. “You mean because he always gets Rebecca a present too?”
Ian nodded. “Yeah.”
Jessica went quiet.

“I honestly never even considered this–not once, lan admitted, unable to put his feelings into words. “But he was already one step ahead, way back on the day Becky had Samuel
When Becky got home with the baby. Jeffrey showed up with a gift. Ian had always just assumed he did it because she’d been through so much.
Just like how some guys bring flowers or a present to their wife after she gives birth.
But lan never realized that every single year, on Samuel’s birthday, Jeffrey would always prepare something for Becky too–and he’d straight–up admit, with zero embarrassment, that he hadn’t lifted a finger during her pregnancy or when she gave birth.
“Jessica, lan shot her a sidelong glance.
Jessica was feeling kind of weird about it too. “What?”
“If Jeffrey really changed for good and swore he’d treat Becky this way for the rest of his life, I’d actually be fine with them getting back together,” Ian admitted, a rare sincerity in his voice. Deep down, all he wanted was for Rebecca to be happy.
I loved her.
But in some ways, it turned out Jeffrey cared for her even more than I ever did.
As long as Jeffrey could keep loving her like this for the rest of their lives, Ian could finally let go and stop worrying.
“No way,” Jessica snapped, still being Rebecca’s ride–or–die grudge holder. “Yeah, the double gifts are nice and all, but it doesn’t just erase that crap he tried pulling with hiding his money before the divorce.”
You can totally love someone and still be a complete scumbag.
Jessica always admitted Jeffrey did right by Rebecca sometimes.
But just because he’s good doesn’t erase the pain he caused.
If doing something nice could really cancel out all the bad stuff, then anyone could just spoil their partner one day and turn around to treat them like dirt the next–or mess up big time whenever they feel like it, and act like it’s no big deal.
“We’re Rebecca’s people–there’s no way we’re backing Jeffrey here,” Jessica shot back. “Come on, where’s your sense of loyalty?”
