“I’m protecting her,” Justin snapped. “Something you clearly failed to do when she was under your roof.”
Daphne leaned into him, sighing dramatically, as if the whole world was against her. “It’s alright, my love. Let them talk. The truth always reveals itself.”
She cast a sidelong glance at me as she spoke those last words, a smirk playing at the corner of her mouth. My stomach twisted. There was something behind that look—something dangerous.
Leo tugged gently at my hand, whispering, “Mom… why is everyone angry?”
I knelt beside him quickly, forcing a calm smile. “It’s just… pack business, sweetheart. Nothing for you to worry about.”
But my heart wasn’t steady. Not anymore.
BBecause Daphne knew. She had to. That look she’d given me—it wasn’t random. It was the look of someone holding a secret over your head, waiting for the perfect moment to drop it.
I stood again, moving slightly closer to Gideon. He didn’t turn, but I knew he sensed me there.
His voice deepened, authority radiating through every word. “You’re welcome to stay for the day, Alpha Royce, but after that, you’ll leave my territory. Whatever decisions you make about your Luna are yours to live with—but her presence here will only cause trouble.”
Justin straightened, his grip tightening around Daphne’s waist. “You don’t get to dictate where I go, Gideon. I came here to take my mate home. And if you truly are the honorable Alpha everyone claims, you’ll let her pack her things and come with me without any more of this nonsense.”
The whole pack became very quite.
Gideon sighed annoyed as he was now running out of patience. “Fine. Do what you will. But don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
With that, he turned, gesturing for the crowd to disperse. The pack obeyed, though many lingered long enough to throw Daphne one last look of contempt before leaving.
As Gideon started walking back toward the mansion, Daphne’s voice followed him, sharp and mocking. “You may have taken my title once, Gideon, but I’ll have something better soon—something you can never take back.”
