Apocalyptic Disasters: Carrying a bun and hoarding supplies novel Chapter 691

Chapter 691: My fault

Bai Meiyue turned to look at her newfound grandfather and didn’t know what to say to him. It was true that Old Master Bai was also a victim in everything that happened but as Yan Wanning’s daughter, she couldn’t help but blame Old Master Bai. How come they never noticed anything? Her mother was almost in her late forties. Because her parents were not good to her and the countryside where she lived was way far from the capital and the city, the villagers hardly cared about laws and regulations.

Her mother was married off to Bai Qingshi when she was just sixteen and she gave birth to her elder brother when she was eighteen.

And it wasn’t like her life as a young girl was filled with love and adoration. She was treated as the slave of the Yan family and was even made to serve Uncle Yan as if he were the son of a landlord.

All these years Yan Wanning suffered in silence as she believed that she was being filial to her parents. Now after so many years she found out that those people she had taken care of were not her parents. How could her mother not feel unbalanced? All those years of suffering for what and for whom? Even after going through so much, Yan Wanning was never able to warm the hearts of her parents. In their last moments, she even took special care of her parents. She believed that at the last moment at least she would be able to warm their hearts.

But now. That hope was long gone. If she was not even their daughter, why would they care for her even in their dying moments? Maybe they were laughing at how foolish Yan Wanning was when she was running around taking care of them when she was nothing but a child that they had stolen.

"When did you find out?" Bai Meiyue’s heart also went up and down like she had been on a rollercoaster but she was rather calm on the surface.

"...The day I saw her. She looks so much like her mother that it is hard not to notice." Old Master Bai knew that his answer was going to make Bai Meiyue angry but he also knew that he couldn’t lie. He would not be able to explain how he knew that Yan Wanning was his daughter. He could only sigh and tell the truth to Bai Meiyue in a low voice. "I wanted to tell her but I couldn’t– I was thinking—"

"It doesn’t matter what you were thinking, Old Master Bai," Bai Meiyue cut him off. She knew that she was being extremely rude to the old man who had done nothing wrong but she just felt unconventionally upset. Her mother was upset and nothing else mattered. Old Master Bai might have many explanations but none of them could help her ease the pain in the heart of her mother.

With a sigh, Bai Meiyue turned around on her feet and headed back inside the mansion.

"I had my own reservations! You know how many times people came to look for me after changing their appearances, saying that they were my children? You have seen me getting chased around by your old madam and getting beaten up." He sighed heavily and rubbed the top of his cane. "And I didn’t want to disclose this matter to her at this point."

When Xiao Chenye heard that his old master still didn’t want to tell the truth to Yan Wanning, his eyes widened in surprise. He looked at Old Master Bai and blinked his eyes in shock. "Old Master —"

"It’s not what you think!" Old Master Bai knew what Xiao Chenye was thinking. This young man had been following his eldest grandson since he was a child and he had watched this man grow up in front of him. So how could he not know what this man was thinking?

"I am not embarrassed because of the identity of my daughter. I never will. How can? When is it my fault? The only reason I wanted to hide this truth from her was because I wanted to dig deeper into this exchange."
