Severing Ties and a Stent Surrontans
36 Severing Ties and a Silent Summons
I ducked away from Ivy’s grasp and quickened my pace toward the office door. The last thing I needed was a physical altercation in a government building. Behind me, the drama continued to unfold.
“Ivy, stop it!” Alistair’s voice was sharp with embarrassment. “This is a public place?
“Don’t tell me to stop!” Ivy’s shrill voice echoed through the hallway. “She’s stealing
you from me! Again!”
I kept walking, refusing to look back. Just a few more steps to the office door. My fingers had just touched the handle when Ivy’s voice rose to a near-scream.
“Look at me when I’m talking to you, Hazel!”
The entire government center fell silent. Every head turned in our direction.
My shoulders tensed, but I didn’t turn around. This was exactly what Ivy wanted- attention, drama, a scene with her as the tragic victim. I pushed the door open.
“She’s stealing my husband!” Ivy announced to the stunned onlookers. “My own stepsister! While I’m dying of cancer!”
I stepped inside the office, where a startled clerk looked up from her computer. Before I could speak, the door burst open again.
“Hazel Shaw has been trying to break up my marriage from the beginning!” Ivy declared, her eyes wild. “Tell them, Alistair! Tell them how she keeps calling you. texting you, begging you to come back!”
Alistair appeared behind her, his face a mask of mortification. “Ivy, please. That’s not what’s happening here.
The clerk cleared her throat nervously. “Perhaps you should reschedule your
appointment?”
“No” I said firmly, “We’re just here to transfer property. It will only take a moment
“Property transfer” Ivy’s laugh was hollow. “Is that what you’re calling it? Wher

ly’s face went completely still. “What villa?”
I watched as Alistair realized his mistake. He’d never told Ivy about our shared property, Another he in his tangled web.
The investment property we purchased together years ago,” he explained, his voice
stramed. “It’s just business.
“Business” lvy’s voice dropped dangerously low. “You said you’d cut all ties with her You promised me!”
“This is the last tie.” Alistair insisted. “After today, it’s done.”
Ivy’s eyes darted between us, calculating. “So you’ve been lying to me about this too What else have you been lying about?”
The clerk shifted uncomfortably. “Should I prepare the documents?”
“Yes,” I said, desperate to finish this transaction and escape.
“No” Ivy snapped, grabbing the cup of hot cocoa Alistair had brought for me off a nearby desk. “You’re not signing anything today.
Before anyone could react, she hurled the contents directly at Alistair. The dark liquid splashed across his expensive white shirt and suit jacket. He gasped, jumping back as the hot liquid soaked through to his skin.
“What the hell, Ivy!” he shouted, frantically dabbing at the spreading stain.
“That’s for lying to me, she hissed. “And for sneaking around with her behind my back.
The security guard finally arrived looking between all of us with stern disapproval. I’m going to have to ask you all to leave the premises if you can’t conduct your
business properly
turned to the clerk. “Can we please just quickly complete this transfer? I swear it will only take a minute

With a defeated sigh, he produced his ID and scrawled his signature on the document. I signed my portion quickly, maintaining my composure despite the chaos around me
“It’s done, the clerk confirmed, stamping the papers. “The property transfer is
complete.”
I felt a weight lift from my shoulders. One less connection to Alistair. One step closer
to freedom.
“I hope you’re happy.” Ivy spat as I walked past her toward the exit. “You’ve taken everything from me, and you’re still taking more.”
I paused, finally meeting her gaze directly. “I’ve taken nothing from you, Ivy. Everything
you have you took from me first.”
Fleft without waiting for her response, the security guard escorting me to ensure 1 made it out safely. Behind me, I could hear Alistair’s placating voice and Ivy’s continued accusations. Their toxic drama was no longer my problem.
That evening, as I finished packing the last of my belongings in my rental apartment. my decision was clear. I needed to move immediately. Ivy knew where I lived, and after
today’s scene, I didn’t trust her to stay away

This had the potential to be a really good read, unfortunately it is inconsistently contradictory and all over the place....
