Chapter 1331: Threat
Will paths weren’t hereditary.
Even if a man and woman of the same path came together to birth a baby, said baby wouldn’t automatically be on their path.
As parents, they could choose to encourage their child to follow a true will path, or ingrain the doctrine of their will paths into them.
In the middle planes, the latter was always the case.
As soon as Kale could speak and think for himself, the Viscount had ordered the best scholars on their world to teach him the doctrine of the Redflame path.
After learning the path of the Redflame, Kale could swear it was only when he was in the presence of his father and older brothers that he felt true heat. Ordinary flames didn’t affect him, he could swim in a pool of lava like it was water.
Though he felt like his father could turn him into ash if he so wished, it had never gotten to that level. He had never felt what he was feeling now.
True heat.
The instant Atticus’ will erupted from his body and enveloped them, Kale’s flames didn’t even last a second. They were snuffed out before he could realize what was happening.
Kale felt a heat slam into him. It was unlike anything he had ever felt. Like he’d been thrown deep within a scorching furnace, like all his centuries of practicing the doctrines of the Redflame path didn’t matter.
A scream tore from Kale’s throat, but the iron grip tightened around his neck, ending his screams.
The sound of sizzling flesh reached his ears, and the excruciating pain roaring from his neck made it obvious where it was coming from.
His neck was burning. No, his whole body was burning. Smoke rose into the air as his flesh seared, but Kale didn’t seem to care. He only cared about making the pain stop.
Kale’s arms desperately clamped down on Atticus’ hand, trying to pry his grip open. But it felt like he had touched scalding metal with his bare hands. His hands recoiled back, shocked by the insane heat.
‘There’s no choice.’
Atticus’ grip kept on tightening, he was getting choked! He fought through the pain and grabbed his arm, wanting to pry it open, but the arm didn’t even so much as budge.
Kale’s eyes had turned bloodshot and every tear that tried to spill from his eyes evaporated from the intense heat.
Kale didn’t even realize that the entire arena had fallen deathly silent. The members of the Redflames that had been cheering moments ago were silent.
He didn’t even realize that, considering the situation, all eyes would be on him. That the other gods would feel nothing but shock.
No, he realized all of this. But nothing seemed to be more important than getting the hell out of this situation.
Kale thrashed around, struggling, trying his very best to escape, but to no avail.
Finally, as he realized the futility of it all, he turned his trembling gaze down toward Atticus. It had lost all the disdain it once held.
Most gods present had lived centuries to millennia, and experienced most things people couldn’t possibly imagine. It had hardened them.
They weren’t ones to startle easily, regardless of the threat, or even break down. But in the face of death, even the best of the best would find themselves overwhelmed.
