Chapter 283

Captain darted past me into Ethan’s room, his nose buried deep in my halfopen bag. Before I could stop him, he was pawing through my stuff, tail wagging like he’d found buried treasure.

Captain, get out of there!I called, but he ignored me completely, his butt wiggling with excitement as he dug deeper.

With a triumphant woof,he emerged with a bright yellow tennis ball clenched between his teeth. The new toy I’d picked up in Moscow. Captain pranced around the room, showing off his prize before dropping it at my feet, tail still whipping back and forth.

So that’s where it went,I muttered, bending down to scratch behind his ears. Happy now?

Ethan walked in behind me, his eyes taking in the disaster zone that was my bagcontents spilled across his pristine hardwood floor. Without a word, he knelt down and started gathering my scattered belongings.

You don’t have to do that,I said, moving to help.

It’s fine,he replied, carefully stacking my notebooks. His hand paused when he came across a sleek black card with no markings. The sight of it didn’t seem to surprise him; he simply placed it with my other things.

Just tossing a black card in your bag?he asked, the corner of his mouth lifting slightly. Very you.

I shrugged. Where else would I put it?

Ethan continued sorting through the mess, pausing again when he found two small leatherbound booklets. His brow furrowed as he turned one over in his hand.

Medical licenses?he asked, genuine confusion crossing his face.

Before I could answer, he’d already opened the first one. Inside was a certification with my photoJade Morganalong with official stamps and a notarized document tucked between the pages.

So this is why you went to Russia?Ethan asked, studying the document. For medical credentials?

I kept my expression neutral. Something like that.

He set the first booklet aside and opened the second one. This time, his reaction was impossible to misshis eyes widened, and his body went completely still. Inside was another license, but with a different photo.

The name on the license read: Dr. Blackwell.

Ethan’s head snapped up, his gaze locking with mine. I knew exactly what he was seeing.

He glanced back at the photo, then at me. The resemblance was unmistakable yet different enough to create plausible deniability. We stared at each other, the unspoken question hanging between us.

After a moment, Ethan carefully closed the booklet and placed it with my other belongings. He finished packing my bag as if nothing had happened.

In the car, exhaustion finally caught up with me. I let my head drop against Ethan’s shoulder, inhaling the familiar scent of his cologne.

Just rest,he murmured, his arm coming around me. We’ll be at your place soon.

I meant to respond, but sleep dragged me under before I could form the words.

When we arrived at my apartment, Max opened the door before we even reached it. Captain bounded past him into the apartment, immediately rolling on the floor like he was home for the first time in years.

About time,Max said, relief evident in his voice. He stepped back to let us in, and I noticed how much more at ease he seemed here

than at the Haxton estate.

Zach was sprawled on the couch, feet propped on the coffee table, looking equally comfortable.

I’m taking a shower and going to sleep,I announced, heading straight for my bedroom. Don’t wake me unless something’s on fire.

What if it’s just smoking?Zach called after me.

Put it out yourself,I replied, closing my door.

It was almost midnight when I slipped out of my apartment and headed to Silas’s place. I’d texted him earlier, but he hadn’t responded- unusual for him.

When I reached his door, I could hear glass clinking inside. I knocked once, then used my spare key when there was no answer.

The apartment was a disaster. Empty whiskey bottles scattered across the floor, clothes thrown haphazardly over furniture, and Silas himself slumped against his bed, staring blankly at the wall.

He didn’t react when I entered, just continued staring into nothing, a halfempty bottle dangling from his fingers.

What the hell is this?I demanded, kicking an empty bottle aside. The noise finally seemed to register.

Silas blinked slowly, focusing on me with difficulty. Jade?he slurred. What’re you doing here?

Looking at a sad drunk who reminds me way too much of his father right now,I said coldly.

That hit home. Silas flinched, his grip tightening on the bottle. He didn’t say anything for a long moment.

Shower. Sleep. I’ll see you at my place tomorrow for catchup lessons,I said, turning to leave.

Why do you care?he asked suddenly, his voice hollow. Is it because your friend? Or is it because of my brother?

I stopped at the door. Do you really need to be this dramatic?

Silas stared at the floor, shoulders slumped.

I’ll see you tomorrow,I said firmly. For lessons.

He nodded slightly. I’ll be there.

The next day, Silas showed up at my apartment looking like death warmed over, but at least he was sober and showered. When he walked in, he froze at the sight of Ryan, Zach, Max, and Maxi all gathered in my living room.

My brother,I said, gesturing to Max. My two friends.I didn’t elaborate on which was which.
