Chapter 187: Attack The Queen

"And that’s mate."

Victor Langley frowned as he looked at the board before him, he didn’t look as hopeless as he seemed back in that holding.

Though, he had a really displeased frown on his face.

"This is getting boring," Victor said.

"Quiet the contrary Victor," the man opposite him replied, "losing is pretty interesting."

"You’ve beaten me seven times," Victor said tightly, "how exactly is that interesting?"

The collector picked up a knight and moved it between his fingers, examining the piece.

"Observing is interesting," he said, "I’m observing your habits, and watching the way a person behaves each time they lose tells me infinitely more than watching them win."

Victor sneered, "So what? This is some kind of personality assessment?"

"You could call it that," the collector hummed, "but really... I just wanted to see how quickly you become sloppy."

Victor froze.

The collector’s tone didn’t change the least bit.

"And I must say," he continued smoothly, "your temper is remarkably easy to provoke. A weakness for someone who wants to sit at the adult table."

Victor’s frown got even

"What are you getting at?"

"What I’m getting at Victor Langley, is this," the man placed the knight back on the board, still attacking the queen in a finished game, "you’re a man when placed on a pedestal feels like they control the world, but as soon as that pedestal is removed..."

"You start crumbling," he continued, "your emotions, power, control, everything just fades away when you hit rock bottom."

Victor frowned.

He hated how easily this man got under his skin. Before this man, Victor felt so small but that much was to be expected, after all considering who this man was..

"So, what do you have planned for me?" Victor asked, hoping to switch the topic.

"Hmm," The man picked up Victor’s Queen before smiling, "nothing, I just want to give you a chance at revenge, after all, don’t you want to know who killed your son?"

Victor froze before looking at the man, this time with a darker frown appeared on his face.

"...What did you just say?" He asked quietly.

The collector smiled, he didn’t feel the least bit threatened by Victor’s mood or expression.

"You heard me," he said, twirling the captured queen between his fingers, "your son? Nathaniel, the golden child of the Langley family, the heir you molded so perfectly....just snuffed out like that."

"Or don’t tell me you also believe that he died from heart failure due to unknown causes."

"You don’t strike me as a man that stupid," the collector said lightly. "Heart failure? At his age? And that too with no prior symptoms nor substances in his system? Come on, even you should’ve realized that something was wrong."

He chuckled.

Victor’s teeth ground together. Of course he knew Nathaniel’s death was anything but natural.

He didn’t even get the chance to properly mount him, much less find out what really happened to his son.

"Who?" he demanded in a quiet tone.

"Hmm?" The collector tilted his head. "Who killed him, you mean?"

Victor didn’t need to repeat himself as the man knew exactly what he wanted.

Instead of giving what Victor wanted, the man just continued looking at the queen piece in his hand with a grin on his face.

"What do you want?" Victor finally asked, understanding the man’s intentions.

"Me?" The collector placed a hand on his chin as he thought about it, "want is a strong word, Victor. I prefer require."

"You see," the man continued, "the board has been set up completely all I require is a move to shake it up a bit and you are perfect."

He handed Victor the queen piece before adding, "did you know that the biggest advantage you can gain is taking away your opponents queen?"

Victor looked at the piece in his hand and then back at the man, a bit confused at what he meant but he wasn’t done yet.

"And that’s exactly what I require from you," the man leaned a bit forward, "destroy the opponent’s queen."

He pointed at the queen in Victor’s hand.

"This," he said, "is the piece that keeps a kingdom together and the most powerful piece on the board."

Victor’s brows furrowed, "and my part in this?"

"Oh come now," the collector said with a small laugh, "even you must have noticed by now. OmniTech’s ’queen’ has returned home safely just a few days after her kidnap. Their CEO values her, whoever he is, he protects her and that means she is the single thread tying his emotions to the world."

The grin on the man’s face was full of amusement.

"Remove the queen," he whispered, "and the king will go mad."
