Wesley shook his head and said, “No idea what she was thinking. I did meet some people lately, but that was all for family business. My old man told me to go shopping with the Sheppard family’s daughter. Could I say no?”
Maxwell gently swirled the drink in his glass, half–listening.
At the end, he said. “Maybe you did too many things that made her misunderstand.”
Wesley rolled his eyes at Maxwell and poured him some more wine.
“Okay, I got it, Mr. Humphrey,” Wesley said sarcastically. “I should’ve been like you. Mr. Humphrey, only having Stephanie around when I was a kid, and now just Roxanne.”
A wave of annoyance suddenly rose in Maxwell’s heart, so he waved his hand to stop Wesley from pouring more wine.
Wesley got interested.
“Angry?” Wesley said with a smile. “I was complimenting you, really.”
“I was kind of jealous of you.” Wesley put his drink aside and leaned back on the couch.
“Was capable enough to turn the family business around and even take it to the next level.”
“Emotionally, Stephanie loved you to the core, was willing to do anything for you, and was even ready to risk her life for you.”
“Even though they switched to Roxanne now, from what I saw online, she was also a really kind person.”
“But what about me…”
In the dim light, nobody could see the look on Wesley’s face.
“I already got the hang of the family business, but there were still a lot of troubles outside.”
“The woman I kept for years suddenly thought I was dirty, and she ignored me even after I explained.”
“I really wanted to be like you, just taking it easy and having fun in life.”
Wesley’s voice echoed in the private room.
Maxwell lowered his eyes a little and looked at the ice slowly spinning in the drink.
Playing around with life?
It seemed like there wasn’t any.
“…By the way, what happened between you, Stephanie, and Roxanne?”
Wesley, who was next to him, was still talking, then suddenly asked Maxwell. “I’ve been kind of following the news online lately, but I still don’t get what you’re actually trying to do.”
“Stephanie and I were going through a divorce, and we were in the cooling–off period,” Maxwell replied.
“What?!” Wesley sat up straight, his face
and right now he looked totally shock Coming out of the shadows,
“For Roxanne?” Wesley looked totally shocked
Maxwell took a sip of his drink.
“Mm.” he replied.
“Not bro, I didn’t get it.” Wesley immediately forgot about his own stuff and said, “Weren’t you and Stephanic always pretty good before? I remember you were pretty happy with her too. Roxanne’s almost gone. I thought you were just taking care of her out of kindness… And, is Stephanie really okay with this?”
Maxwell just gently swirled the ice in his drink and didn’t look at Wesley.
“She agreed.” Maxwell said, “so we’re in the cooling–off period now.
“This isn’t right!” Wesley stood up and walked around the private
room.
It looked kind of confused.
“She really left?” Wesley said. “I remember back then, there was a super pretty girl from Party B who came to you, but you couldn’t be bothered. That girl went to show off in front of Stephanie, and Stephanie just put her in her place. Didn’t she even get mad at you for days and wouldn’t let you touch her?”
Wesley was talking, and Maxwell remembered that thing.
The whole thing was just a misunderstanding. He wasn’t interested in the other person at all. He was just tired that day and didn’t say anything, but the other person thought that since he didn’t tell them to leave, it meant yes, so they went to Stephanie and made a scene.
He still remembered what Stephanie looked like when she lost it.
