Belinda was mature for her age. She wasn’t even five yet, but she talked in a really organized way.

Belinda jumped down from the chair, and the big–eared dog plushie in her arms had its ears flapping.

“Don’t come looking for me again,” she repeated once more. “It’s about time. I’m going back to sleep.”

After she finished talking, Belinda was about to go outside.

Maxwell stood up. He didn’t go after her, but said, “Just this once, take it. I bought it especially for you.”

Belinda turned around, her lips pressed flat.

Belinda said, “Uncle, I told you, you could give them to someone else.”

“You could do whatever you wanted with them after you took them.” Maxwell said.

Belinda said. “this is yours, I wouldn’t take it.”

“Uncle, were you trying to pick on a kid like me?”

Maxwell sighed, “That’s not what I meant.”

He just wanted to be good to her.

But Belinda just looked at him.

The dean, who had been waiting at the door, heard the noise and came in, looking at Maxwell with disapproval.

Someone came and took Belinda back, the dean stood here, watching Maxwell with his lips pressed tight.

“You go back,” the dean said. “We will take care of her.”

Maxwell looked away. He lowered his head, and the messy hair on his forehead hid his feelings.

He took a notebook out of his pocket, wrote a check, and handed it to the dean.

“Donation,” he said. “for Haraville Orphanage. How to use it, you guys decide.”

The dean looked complicated, but still took the check.

Haraville Orphanage really needed this money.

“These things.” Maxwell paused for a moment and said. “See if any other kids could use them.”

The dean nodded.

“Don’t tell the other kids it was me who donated it, and take good care of her.” Maxwell added.

The dean nodded. “We would.”

Maxwell nodded.

“I left.”

He said this, not sure who he was talking to, then turned around and walked into the night.

Time flew by.

The whole city was full of turmoil.

Jeremiah was rushing to the old house.

He had several phones in his pocket. One was on a video call with Stephanie and the others, and another one was checking for news from the old house.

Then, he started to have a headache.
