Everyone thought her life was perfect just because she carried the Bernan family name, but honestly, it was anything but glamorous. The family gave her a place to sleep and meals to eat, but that was about it. She didn’t have a single cent of allowance. Whenever she asked her dad for money, he’d just tell her she was grown up now and needed to be independent. Like that was the real reason. He was just playing favorites. Aliyah got a six-figure allowance every single month.
Lottie’s own paychecks had never been impressive, and she never really saved any money. Just recently, she’d even taken out an online loan to buy a birthday present for Sonja’s mom. If she could start earning commission from sales, things would be so much easier. Maybe she could finally afford to buy designer brands just like Aliyah.
Sonja was gone for what felt like forever. By the time she came back, Lottie was slumped over the table, drunk and completely out of it. Scott looked a little tipsy, his cheeks flushed, but he was still totally awake.
Sonja gave him an apologetic smile. “Sorry about that. Work’s been a bit crazy today.”
“It’s fine,” Scott said, brushing it off. “Busy people always have more to do. Makes sense.”
The lights in the room were soft, and Scott couldn’t help but notice how pretty and delicate Sonja’s face looked. His heart skipped a beat. He cleared his throat and slid over to sit next to her. He hadn’t forgotten why he’d come tonight. At first, he’d held back because someone else was there, but now Lottie was asleep. Maybe it was the alcohol, but suddenly he felt braver.
He reached out for Sonja’s hand, his own hands a little shaky. “Sonja, I…”
Before he could finish, Sonja cut him off. “Sorry, Scott, I have to take this call.”
Scott waited for half an hour, but Sonja never came back. Then his phone buzzed with a message.
[Sorry, Scott. Something urgent came up at work. I have to head back to the office. Could you take Lottie home for me? I’ll send you her address.]
He frowned, glancing at Lottie passed out on the table. After a moment, he stood and gently lifted her into his arms. She was limp and completely out of it, clinging to him as he tried to adjust her. Her body was soft and pressed right up against him. Scott caught a glimpse of her neck and the curve of her chest. He hadn’t realized Sonja’s little assistant had such a figure. He felt his breath quicken, his throat suddenly dry.
The next morning, Lottie woke up with a pounding headache. She grabbed her alarm clock and realized she was already late for work. Still half-asleep, she yawned and dialed her phone.
