Chapter 106

Max’s POV
Taylor’s apartment was suffocating; the tension was thick between us as I paced back and forth. She stood by the window, arms crossed, staring out of it. My blood boiled.
“Are you going to say something?” I barked, spinning on my heel to face her.
She didn’t flinch. Taylor was a fortress, as usual. “What do you want me to say, Max?” she asked in a bored tone.
“I want you to tell me what the hell you’re planning with Ivy and Asher!” My voice echoed off the walls. “Because so far, all you’ve done is destroy any chance I had with Ivy! You were supposed to help me win her over, not drive her away!”
Taylor turned slowly, her face a mask of calm that only made me angrier. “And whose fault is that, Max? You think I’m the one who ruined it? Maybe look in the mirror for once! Look at yourself, would you even want yourself?”
I stepped closer, my fists clenched. “Don’t you dare put this on me. You were the one with all the big plans, and now all you’ve done is poison her against me. I trusted you, Taylor! You swore you would handle it!”
“Oh, give me a break, Max.” She rolled her eyes, her voice dripping with disdain. “You were not what she wanted. That’s your problem, I couldn’t help with that. And Asher? He’s not your problem!”
“Not my problem?” I laughed bitterly. “You’ve got to be kidding me. That guy is standing in my way, and you’re just going to let him be?” I jabbed a finger in her direction. “What’s your plan, Taylor? Tell me. What are you going to do about Asher?”
She didn’t respond, just stared at me, unflinching.
I stepped closer, the space between us shrinking. “You can’t just sit there and do nothing. You owe me answers!”
Her jaw tightened, and for a second, I thought she might actually crack. But then she surprised me.
“I can’t,” she said softly.
“Can’t what?” I demanded, my voice rising again. “Can’t deal with him? Can’t be bothered to do your damn job? The one you promised you would do?
What is it?”
She snapped then, her voice rising to match mine. “I can’t do anything to him because I like him, okay?”
The words hit me like a punch to the gut. I froze, staring at her, trying to process what she’d just said, “…What?”
“I like him,” she repeated, louder this time, as if saying it again would make it easier to believe. “That’s why I can’t do anything to him. My hands are tied.”
I blinked, my eyes widened in disbelief.
Taylor raked her fingers through her hair and began to pace from one end of the room to the other. “I don’t know what to do, okay? I don’t know where my hate for Ivy ends and my love for Asher begins. It is entwined. I thought I just hated her, hated the life that she had, but no! It doesn’t end there! I want more. I want the life that she has. I crave the life that she has. I want Asher Sterling! I want to be married to him!” she shouted. “I want him, and it’s crazy because I don’t know what to do. My hands are tied;/I can’t hurt him!” She let out an exasperated groan and raked her fingers through her hair again. “I
can’t even think…”
I stared at Taylor, my mouth agape. This couldn’t be the woman I knew. Where was the calm and collected woman who was always in control of her emotions? This one was erratic. This one had fallen in love…
This would get in the way of my plans, our plans. I wanted Ivy. That was the plan. She was to help me ruin Asher and Ivy’s relationship. Ivy being with me was enough ruin for her, according to her!
This complicated things badly. This meant that she couldn’t hurt Asher, not in a way that mattered. The same Asher that had my woman? I shook my

head. I had to take matters into my own hands.
I would do this behind her back. Asher had to suffer for what he had taken from me. He had to pay for it.
I grinned at her as I walked up to her. She stared at me in confusion. I took another step toward her, closing the gap between us. She didn’t back away, but her breath hitched as I reached out, gripping her chin between my fingers. Her wide green eyes locked onto mine, defiant even now.
“You’ve made a real mess of things, haven’t you?” I murmured, my voice low.
Hér lips parted, but no words came out.
