Chapter 120

Janine’s POV

I sat with my phone in my hand, my thumb repeatedly pressing the screen as I scrolled through my contacts, hoping someone, anyone, might know something about Taylor. Each dial tone felt like a ticking clock, growing louder and louder as the seconds dragged on.

I could hear Asher pacing back and forth behind me, his voice pleading into the phone as he called Taylor again, but she wasn’t answering. He was sending voicemails to her line. At some point, he tried to call Ivy, but her line was switched off.

Come on, come on,I muttered under my breath, willing someone to pick up. The frustration was thick in the air, hanging between Luca and me as we both dialed and redialed numbers. Luca was quiet, but I could tell by the way his jaw was clenched that he was just as anxious as I was.

Nothing,I said, hanging up the phone again. No one knows anything. She’s vanished off the radar.”

Luca glanced at me, exhaling sharply. This is useless. No one’s seen her, no one knows anything. His frustration mirrored mine, his body tense as he continued to scroll through his own list of contacts.

Asher, on the other hand, was beside himself, his phone glued to his ear as he made another call, his voice strained. Taylor, it’s Asher. Please, I’m doing what you wanted. Justjust tell me where you are. I can’t keep doing this. I need you to-

His voice faltered, and I saw the weight of his desperation in his eyes. He hung up again, the click of the screen feeling like a punch to my gut.

Shit,he muttered under his breath, his hands shaking slightly as he dialed her number once more.

I couldn’t sit still any longer. Every unanswered call, every voicemail, was a reminder of how little time we had left. Taylor was out there, and she was slipping further and further away from us with every minute that passed. I wasn’t going to let this go on any longer.

I slammed my phone down on the desk, frustration boiling over. We need to find her. This isn’t working.

I turned to Luca, whose face was etched with the same exhaustion I was feeling. I’m trying, Janine,he said quietly, his voice rough. But we’re getting nowhere. She’s too damn good at covering her tracks. I called her apartment, she hasn’t been there for days. I tried to reach her manager, no one has

seen her.

I ran my fingers through my hair, trying to think of something, anything, that would give us a lead. The room felt small, suffocating. Any lead on Max? You had people out looking for him for weeks now. Any heads up? They could be together. Asher mentioned she said she was going to call Max, maybe they are accomplices?

I did,Luca answered in a solemn voice. The Pl was the first person I called when this ordeal started. There is no new development.

Maybe she’s using burner phones,I said, more to myself than anyone else. Something to keep us from tracing her.

Luca nodded, but his face was drawn. Or she’s laying low with people who can keep us off her trail. We need something more concrete.
