Hleaned back in my chair, swirling the whiskey in my glass as I listened to the man across from me finalize the details. The cigar smoke in my office hung thick, curling into the dim light above us.
“We move the shipment next week,” he said, his tone confident but cautious. “Colombian grade, through the usual ports. Our distributors in Miami are ready, and we’ve secured a clean route.”
I nodded, but didn’t speak yet, Business was more than just logistics, it was about control. Anticipation. Knowing when to push forward and when to pull
back.
“And the Feds?” I finally asked.
“Taken care of.” He smirked, adjusting the gold cufflink on his sleeve. “A few key figures got their incentives.”
Good. The last thing I needed was unnecessary heat. This deal would expand my reach, increase my influence. But the bigger the deal, the bigger the
risk.
I took a ‘slow sip of whiskey, letting the burn settle in my throat before setting the glass down. “We move forward. My men will oversee the transport. Any problems, I expect to hear about them first.”
The man grinned, standing up to shake my hand. “Pleasure doing business, Don.”
I watched him leave, my mind already shifting to other matters. There were rumors of a rising ring in the city. It was fun to watch the kids battle and play boss, but when one was getting stronger, I either had to clip their wings or recruit them into my family.
The Lasers were gaining strength, and I was undecided on what I wanted to do with them.
A knock at the door pulled me from my thoughts.
“Enter,” I called.
One of my men stepped inside, a broad–shouldered enforcer with a scar splitting his eyebrow.
“Boss, someone’s here to see you. Says he’s got a deal from the CEO of Sterling Industries.”
I paused.
Sterling Industries?
That was a name that carried real weight. Unlike my kind of power, theirs was built on legitimacy, government contracts, and untouchable influence. They didn’t get their hands dirty–not like I did. So why the hell would they come to me?
I studied my man carefully. “You’re sure?”
He gave a firm nod. “Positive. The guy’s waiting outside.”
For a moment, I didn’t speak. This wasn’t the kind of meeting I could ignore. If Sterling Industries was reaching out, it meant they either needed something or saw me as a problern.
“Bring him in.”
Minutes later, the door opened again, and a sharply dressed man stepped in. He carried himself with the kind of arrogance that came from wealth and
connections.
He wasted no time. “The CEO of Sterling Industries has a business proposition for you.” He slid a card onto my desk. “The details. Be there if you’re

Then, just like that, he left.
I picked up the card, running my thumb over the raised text. A meeting. Tomorrow.
Whatever they wanted, it was big.
I arrived at the location early. It was well–chosen, open enough to keep things from feeling too dangerous, but private enough to ensure we wouldn’t be overheard.
I stepped out of my car, adjusting my cuffs as my men spread out, blending into the surroundings. I didn’t trust meetings like this. Even with Sterling Industries involved, I wasn’t about to walk into anything blind.
My eyes scanned the area. Then I saw him.
Marcus Sterling sat at a booth in the corner, his posture relaxed but his eyes sharp. He looked like a man who always got what he wanted.
I made my way over, sliding into the seat across from him. I didn’t speak first.
“I believe you have an idea why we’re here,” Marcus said, his voice calm, measured. “I know you had affiliations with Taylor.”
Had. Past tense. He chose his words carefully.
Taylor.
That woman had no loyalty. Not to me, not to anyone. She played the game well, too well, but I wasn’t a fool. She used people. I had known that for a long time, but until recently, I had let it slide.
Not anymore.
He leaned forward. “She took someone important to me. I need to know where. I know it’s impossible for her to have pulled it off alone. I’m sure she had help.”
I kept my expression neutral, taking my time before responding. “You said we’re here for business, but all I’ve heard so far is information you already know. What’s the point of this meeting?”
Marcus didn’t blink. “I was just getting to that. I wanted to make sure we’re on the same page.”
Then, he laid out his offer.
“I’m offering you protection. The full backing of Sterling Industries. You’ll be free to conduct your businesses without too many restrictions.” A beat. “And in addition to that, I’m offering you one million dollars. I’ll write the check as soon as you tell me where Taylor would keep someone she kidnapped.”
– went still.
One million dollars. And something even more valuable–security. The kind of protection only someone like Marcus could offer. No more interference, no more looking over my shoulder.
It was, without question, the best deal I had ever been offered.
I tapped my fingers against the table, considering. Then, slowly, I smirked.
The offer hung in the air between us. One million dollars. Protection. A free pass to conduct my business without too many restrictions. It was everything a man in my position could want–everything i’d spent years searching for, fighting for
And yet, for the first time in a long time, I hesitated.
I leaned back in my seat, fingers drumming lightly against the table. Across from me, Marcus Sterling sat perfectly still, unreadable. He had laid his cards

on the table, and now he was waiting Patient Controlled. The kind of van who had nothing to lose and everything to gain.
