Chapter 136
Chapter 136
Asher’s POV
Son
I sat at my desk, my eyes scanning the file Isabella had given me. Luca and Janine were either side, flipping through pages, muttering under their breaths. The file was thick, filled with everything we needed, his name, criminal record, the people he had worked for, and most importantly, his current address.
I let out a low whistle, shaking my head. Isabella really outdid herself this time.
“She’s good,” I muttered, flipping to another page.
Luca glanced up. “Who?”
w
“Isabella,” I said. “She always gets the job done, no matter what. If there’s information to be found, she’ll find it.” I exhaled, tapping the file. “Honestly, she’s the best at this.”
Janine arched a brow. “High praise, coming from you.”
Luca turned a page, his brows raising slightly as he tapped the paper. He looked up and met my eyes, giving me the look.
I smirked.
Janine, who had been reading in silence, glanced between us and groaned. “No. No, no, no, no. We are not doing this again.”
Luca leaned back in his chair, feigning innocence. “Doing what?”
“You two charging in headfirst without thinking,” she snapped. “The last time you did that, Marcus ended up in the hospital. And now he’s in a coma.”
I sighed. “Janine”
“No,” she cut in. “I’m serious, Asher. You two have no sense of self–preservation. If you think I’m letting you run off without a plan, you’re out of your damn mind.”
I exhaled through my nose, rubbing my temples. “Look, this guy isn’t dangerous. According to his profile, he’s a tech guy, works behind the scenes, no actual combat experience. We’re not dealing with some hardened hitman here.”
Janine folded her arms. “I don’t care. We do this my way. So nobody gets hurt.”
Luca huffed. “Fine. What’s your way?”
She pulled out her phone and made a call. “I’m bringing in a private security detail.”
Luca and I exchanged a look, but neither of us argued.
An hour later, we stood outside a small, cluttered house on the outskirts of the city. The blinds were drawn, the front porch stacked with unopened packages, and an old gaming chair sat abandoned on the lawn.
The guy was exactly what I expected.
When the door opened, he stood there in a loose-fitting hoodie, faded sweatpants, and thick glasses that looked a little too big for his face. His hair was unkempt, his eyes darting between us nervously.
“Uh…” He blinked. “I don’t order food. You have the wrong house.”
Before we could speak, he tried to shut the door, but Luca shoved his foot in the way.
“Nice try, genius,” Luca said, pushing forward.

The guy stumbled back as we stepped inside. Janine and the security detail remained outside, taking up positions around the house,
“W–wait, who are you?” he stammered, backing away.
I shut the door behind me. “We just want to talk.”
His eyes darted to the window, calculating his odds of running.
I shook my head. “Bad idea.”
Luca plopped onto his worn–out couch, stretching his arms. “Relax, man. We’re not here to kill you.”
“That, that’s exactly what someone here to kill me would say!” he stammered. “I don’t know who you are, but you need to leave.
I pulled out the file and tossed it onto his coffee table. His face went pale as he scanned the papers.
“You know why we’re here,” I said.
He swallowed hard. “I,I don’t”
I leaned in. “People have died because of this. And I won’t hesitate to add you to that list if you keep wasting my time.”
His breath hitched. “I,I swear, I don’t know anything”
“Bullshit.”
Luca stretched lazily. “Look, man. You’ve got two choices. Option one, you tell us everything you
He tilted his head. “Well, option two isn’t great for you.”
The guy fidgeted, adjusting his glasses with shaking hands. “I, I need to think”
Gunshots.
The sound shattered the air outside.
My phone rang almost immediately.
Janine.
I answered, already moving.
“Out the back, now!” she ordered. “We’ve got company.”
Luca grabbed the guy by the hoodie as I yanked open the back door. We bolted, cutting through the yard as more gunfire erupted. The security team returned fire, covering our escape.
We dove into the waiting car, slamming the doors shut as Janine peeled off down the street. The guy was shaking, his breath ragged as he clutched his seatbelt.
Gunfire erupted behind us, bullets pinging off the armored SUV as Janine gritted her teeth and slammed her foot on the gas. The engine roared, tires screeching against the pavement as we weaved through the dark streets.
“Shit!” Luca cursed, ducking as a bullet cracked against the rear windshield. “These assholes really don’t wanna let us go.”
I twisted in my seat, catching a glimpse of the blacked–o
SUVS tailing us. Muzzle flashes flickered from their windows. The security detail returned fire, one of their shots shattering a side mirror on the lead car, forcing it to swerve.
The tech guy was curled up in his seat, hands gripping his knees. “Oh god, oh god, this is insane!” he babbled.

“Welcome to the real world,” I muttered, pulling out my gun.
Janine’s voice was steady despite the chaos. “Hold on.”
She jerked the wheel hard, sending us veering into a side street. The pursuing cars followed, their tires screeching, but Janine had already anticipated it. She gunned it toward an intersection just as a semi–truck roared through.
With perfect timing, she swerved past, barely missing it. The first chasing SUV wasn’t so lucky–Its driver hit the brakes too late. Metal crunched as the semi clipped its front end, sending it spinning into a pole.
“One down,” Luca muttered.
