Asher’s POV
I sat in Isabella’s office, watching the news on the screen mounted to the wall. The broadcast had switched to a panel discussion, where analysts viere picking apart every detail of Isabella’s report. The footage of her interview played on a loop in the corner of the screen. The words “Organized Crime Exposed, FBI Launches Investigation” scrolled across the bottom.
She had done it.
The moment she hinted that the information had come from a rival mafia family, she redirected the blowback. Now, the Don and his people weren’t looking at us, they were too busy trying to sniff out a rat within their own ranks.
Luca leaned back in his chair, arms crossed. “They’re scrambling. The FBI just announced they’re officially investigating. That means all those corrupt politicians, law enforcement connections, everyone’s gonna start distancing themselves.”
Isabella, sitting behind her desk, tapped her nails against the wood. “Which means we just made things worse for them. They’ll be desperate.”
I exhaled, rubbing the back of my neck. “Yeah, and desperate men do stupid things.”
She turned toward me. “You worried?”
I met her gaze. “We’re still breathing, so I’ll call that a win. But I don’t like waiting around for the other shoe to drop.“,
Luca smirked. “You really think they’ll come after you when they’re too busy tearing themselves apart?”
I shook my head. “They might not come after me directly. But we don’t know who they’re blaming. If they figure out I had anything to do with it…” let the thought hang.
Isabella sighed and leaned back in her chair. “You knew what you were signing up for.”
“Yeah, but I didn’t sign up to wait around and hope they don’t connect the dots.”
She nodded toward the screen. “Well, they’ll have a hell of a time doing that now. Every news outlet is running the story. The FBI is involved. People are going to start talking.”
Luca grabbed the remote and muted the TV. “Then let’s talk about what comes next. If they start looking in the wrong places, someone innocent could get caught in the crossfire.”
I frowned. “We need to find out what they know.”
Isabella tilted her head. “You mean, find out who they think sold them out?”
I nodded.
Luca leaned forward. “I might have a contact who can dig around. But if they get even a whiff of suspicion…”
“I know,” I said. “That’s why we move carefully.”
My phone buzzed on the table. I picked it up and frowned at the unknown number.
You think you’re safe?
A second message followed immediately.
We know what you did.
My chest tightened.

Chapter 139
Luca noticed the shift in my expression. “What?”
I turned my phone so he and Isabella could see.
Her face went blank. “That could be anyone.”
“Or it could be them,” I said.
Luca took the phone from my hand and studied the messages. “No threats. Just vague enough to make you paranoid,” He handed it back. “They want you to sweat.”
I exhaled slowly. “Well, it’s working.”
Isabella tapped her fingers against the desk again, her mind already working through the angles. “Who else knows about your involvement?”
“Besides the people in this room?” I shrugged. “Ethan, but-”
I stopped.
Luca sat up. “But what?”
I glanced at the time. I hadn’t heard from Ethan since the last time.
I dialed his number. It rang and rang before finally going to voicemail.
I stood up. “Something’s wrong.”
Luca followed my lead. “He’s not answering?”
“No,” I said, my pulse picking up. “And considering he’s the most paranoid person I know, that’s not a good sign.”
Isabella leaned forward. “You think they got to him?”
I didn’t answer. I was already moving toward the door.
Luca grabbed his jacket. “Let’s go.”
I banged on the door.
No answer.
Luca and I exchanged a look before I pulled out the key Ethan had given me for emergencies. This definitely counted.
I pushed open the door and stepped inside. The place was a mess. Ethan wasn’t exactly the cleanest person to begin with, but this was different. Drawers had been pulled out, papers scattered.
Luca scanned the room. “Looks like someone got here before us.”
I moved deeper inside. His laptop was missing. His hard drives, too.
“He ran,” I muttered.
Luca raised a brow. “Ran? Or was taken?”
I bent down and picked up a discarded hoodie from the floor. “No signs of a struggle, No blood. If they took him, they didn’t drag him out kicking and screaming.”
Luca frowned. “Maybe he got spooked and bolted.”

I stood up. Then the question is, where did he go?”
My phone buzzed again.
You’re not as untouchable as you think.
Luca peered over my shoulder. “Same number?”
I nodded.
