Chapter 15

Asher’s POV

Are you okay, man?Luca asked for the umpteenth time that week. We were in my living room.

I turned to glare at him. What do you think?I turned back to stare at my reflection in the mirror. My hair was sticking out oddly because I had run my fingers through it repeatedly. I was sporting stubble on my chin and jawline, and my eyes looked sunken, like I hadn’t slept in dayswhich wasn’t far from the truth.

You look like shit, and I’m genuinely worried,he said.

I exhaled. Luca, I told you I was fine. You didn’t have to stop by.

He eyed me. Yeah, of course. There’s absolutely no reason to be worried about you right now.He ran his fingers through his hair. I mean, can’t you just call her? She’s your wife, isn’t she? And you definitely miss her.”

Damn right I did. After our last argument, Ivy had gone home, and I hadn’t heard from her in two weeks. She didn’t come back to our house either. I was hoping she would, considering she had her things here. She didn’t respond to any of my texts checking in on her.

Maybe send her a text? Call her? I feel like you have to smooth th-

I already did,I cut in dismissively. I walked up to the side table and poured myself a healthy glass of whiskey, but before I could take a sip, Luca reached over and snatched it from my hand.

Not today! His tone was stern. And you didn’t. You maybe left three messages, and that was it.

Normally, I would’ve argued and fought to get my glass and the bottle back, but I didn’t have the energynot today.

I plopped down on the sofa and shut my eyes. It doesn’t matter. I’ll see her today, after all.” She had texted me two days ago about her parents wanting to meet my family for a small dinner at their home tonight. I was looking forward to it, to seeing. her again.

And what? You two are going to pretend like everything’s okay? You’re not fooling anyone, trust me. You’re definitely not. going to fool Marcus. He’ll call out the bullshit before anyone else does,” Luca said, leaning closer.

Well, I’m very good at pretending. It should be easy,I replied in a solemn voice.

The weeks without Ivy had passed in a blur. It didn’t help that I’d been drunk for most of it. Thankfully, I’d managed to stay under the radar, away from the watchful eyes of the media and my father’s judgmental gaze. It was hard to put into words. how I felt after our argument.

At first, I was numb. I stood in that elevator for a long time. Her words had cut deep, and I didn’t know how to react. I had never really cared about how anyone perceived me. It was the first thing I’d learned to do, considering the kind of family I had. Yet, I cared about what Ivy thought of me. I’d been worried since the first time she came up to me and told me I wasn’t shit. The words stuck with me, even nowmore than ever. Now that I was truly trying to make her happy, to be deserving of her. She was my wife, after all, contract marriage or not.

Knowing she didn’t think highly of me, that she had no trust in me whatsoever, shattered something deep inside. I spent every night of the last few days drunk and partying with girls. I knew I was unhinged when Luca was the sober one between us, night after night. I wanted so badly not to care. I convinced myself that I didn’t. She meant nothingjust a means to get what I wanted from my dad, my own company. I almost believed it, until she texted me.

Luca leaned closer. You didn’t convince anyone this week that you were okay. You weren’t. I could see it, everyone could see it. Your reckless partying and the long line of girls on your arm were a desperate cry for help.

Chapter 15

My eyelids flickered open. Okay, slow down, Luca. No need to come for me like that. You’ve always said I was too slow for this lifestyle, and I decided to up my game. I thought you’d be happy

He shook his head. Leave the fast life to me, Asher, I can’t be worried about you and live my life at the same time.

I rolled any eyes. You don’t have to stick around. I’ll get a babysitter,I muttered.

Luca clicked his tongue. Good luck finding anyone else who’ll put up with you. Your wife left you after barely a week of marriage. There’s gotta be some kind of record for that.

1 let out a chuckle despite my mood. Luca burst into laughter.
