I crouched beside him, my heart pounding. “Hey,” I whispered.

I reached out and pressed my hand to his forehead and immediately gasped. He was burning

“This isn’t normal,” I muttered, my voice shaky. I bit my lip. “Water,” I said to myself, fumbling for my bag. “I need to get you some water. I have some here.”

Before I could even move, his hand shot up, his fingers locking around my wrist.

“Ah!” I yelped, wincing from the pain.

His eyes snapped open, glowing faintly in the dark. “Who are you?” he demanded.

“I–uh–you’re hurt!” I stammered, trying to tug my wrist free.

His grip tightened instead. The heat radiating from him was almost unbearable, and his strength didn’t match his condition.

“Move,” I hissed through clenched teeth. “It hurts!”

However, he didn’t move. Instead, he leaned closer, his nose brushing my hair, and I froze.

Then, he sniffed me.

What the hell?

“Hey!” I exclaimed, panicking. I kicked, desperate to get him off me, and my knee collided straight into his groin.

He let out a strangled groan, loosening his grip. “What the hell was that for?” he gasped, curling slightly from the pain.

I stumbled back, rubbing my sore wrist, glaring at him. “For crushing my wrist and sniffing me! Are you insane?”

He turned his head, his eyes narrowing through the haze. Then, he sniffed the air again, appearing to be confirming something. “You’re… human,” he muttered.

I swallowed hard. “You’re sick,” I said, changing the topic, trying to sound calm. “I was just trying to help you, okay?”

He tried to sit up, but his body betrayed him. He barely managed to lift his shoulder before groaning in pain. “I don’t need your help,” he rasped, though his entire body screamed otherwise.

I ignored him and dug through my bag. “I think I have something for this…”

“For what?”

“Your fever, obviously.”

He snorted weakly. “A fever? You think a werewolf-”

“-can’t get sick? Yeah, I’ve heard that before,” I cut him off, rummaging faster. Abel also said the same thing when he had the cut above his eyebrow. I nearly smiled at the memory, but realized I was still mad at him. “Tell that to the guy who’s practically boiling.”

When I finally pulled out the fever patch, his expression turned confused. “What the fuck is that?” he asked, eyebrows furrowing as he eyed the colorful patch in my hand.

“It’s medicine,” I said.

“That’s not medicine.”

“It’s modern medicine,” I countered. “Now stop complaining.”

Before he could speak again, I leaned in and slapped the patch right onto his forehead.

He froze completely.

For a second, I thought he was about to rip it off and tear it in half. The adhesive made a faint sound as I smoothed it over his skin.

“There you go,” I said softly, smiling up at him despite the tension. “That should help with the

fever.”

He looked into my eyes, then he began to observe my entire face, a faint look of recognition flashing through them. My smile dropped, and I was about to pull away. However, he held onto my wrist again, but this time, it wasn’t as painful as before.

I frowned in confusion. “Huh?” I asked, thinking maybe I’d misheard him.

He didn’t answer. He just stared at me with those strange eyes of his.

“What are you talking about?” I muttered, brushing some dirt off my knees. His gaze waver. It was unnerving, even in his weakened state.

“Okay,” I said softly, trying to diffuse the tension. “You probably have a fever dream. You should rest in your home.”

I sat back and rummaged through my bag again. My stomach growled, reminding me I hadn’t eaten since that awkward dinner earlier. I sighed, fishing out a small pouch of fruit snacks. They were my favorite–little chewy bursts of sugar that always made bad days slightly better.

I hesitated for a second. Then, glancing at the man on the ground, I sighed again. “Fine,” I muttered under my breath. “You look like you need it more than I do.”

When I held the packet toward him, his gaze flicked from my face to the snacks and back again.

“Take these,” I said firmly. “I don’t know how werewolf bodies work, but if you’ve got a fever, there’s a high chance your blood sugar’s dropping too. You seem pale. Eat these. They will help.”

He just stared, the corners of his mouth twitching.

“I’m serious,” I said, frowning. “They’re my favorite, so don’t take them for granted.”

Finally, he smiled, or something close to it.

“No wonder he kept you to himself,” he murmured.

He tilted his head slightly, eyes glinting in the moonlight. “Look at what he’s hiding.”

A chill crawled down my spine. “What are you talking about?”

I got to my feet, brushing the dirt off my jeans, trying to steady my pulse. “You’re delirious. I should head back before he notices I’m gone.”

I took a step back, but before I could move farther, his hand shot out again.

“Wait, wait,” he said, his lips curving into a mischievous smile.
