Aiden frowned. He turned to look at Arwen, only to find her staring at Selene coldly.
The men who were about to drag Selene out paused mid their action.
And Selene smirked. She looked at Arwen and said, "If you send me away today, Arwen, this will only prove that you have gotten scared of losing Aiden to me. So, think again —do you really want to send me away? Are you ready to admit that you fear losing him to me if I stay around?"
Arwen didn’t respond, but the sharp clench of her jaw said enough. She slowly walked in Selene’s direction —with measured and deliberate steps.
Selene thought that her words had struck a nerve, so she pressed further, "If you are so confident in what you and Aiden share, there is no need to be afraid of me. Let me stay and prove how much you actually trust him.
As those smug words left her lips, Arwen stopped directly in front of her.
"What do you think? I —"
Smack!
Before Selene could finish... — a hard, resounding slap landed across her cheek, the sting searing hot.
It was so swift that no one could register it until the sharp crack echoed through the hall, stunning everyone present there into silence.
Selene’s cheek burned, her eyes stinging with involuntary tears. Carla, panicked, rushed to her side. "Ms. Selene, are you alright?" she asked worriedly.
However, Selene’s eyes only blazed with fury. Looking at Arwen, she growled. "How dare you —"
smack!
However, instead of a response of words, Arwen’s palm met her other cheek, equally sharp, equally merciless.
Selene stumbled, gasping. This time her temper snapped —her fingers clenched into a fist as she raised her hand to return the slap.
Aiden lunged forward, but he was still a step too far.
However, even though he didn’t appear to protect, Selene’s hand never reached Arwen. It got held mid-air, tight in Arwen’s grip.
"You —"
"Ms. Martin," Arwen cut her off smoothly, her tone even, deliberate. "People don’t fear lighting stove with fire. But just to prove they are not afraid, would they be foolish enough to burn their whole house down? Trust me, I am not stupid."
Selene’s teeth ground together, her glare sharp enough to cut. But Arwen stood in front of her, unflinched, staring back at her evenly.
"And those two slaps," Arwen continued, her voice calm, "were just a reminder to you. A reminder to remind you that not everything in this world belongs to you. I hope you will keep it in mind after today."
"Arwen, you are far too audacious. Do you think I will let these two slaps slide?" Selene hissed.
However, Arwen only gave her a look filled with cold pity. "You’d better, Ms. Martin," she replied quietly. "Because if you don’t, then I would have to remember the stunt you pulled last night."
Her grip tightened once more before she shoved Selene’s hand away, making her stagger back a step.
