“You see me breathing. You see me burning. You see me standing here when you swore I was rotting. You thought you buried me, but what you really did was forge me. You turned me into something you cannot kill. You tried to erase me and instead you gave me rage enough to burn the world.”
He gripped the knife tighter, his knuckles white, and his words came again, spitting through clenched teeth.
You think you are more than flesh, Damon. You think you are a beast.
But I know better. I cut you once. I put you under. I made the earth your coffin. Do not forget who you are facing. Do not forget who l am. I am the one who made you bleed.”
I stepped closer again, smiling wider. “Let’s see, brother.”
I shifted as I rushed to him.
Take it. Twist it. Break him with his own weapon. Show him what silver tastes like when it cuts him instead of us.
And then I heard her.
“Damon, be careful!”
He’s got the knife!” she screamed
“Do not let him touch you. Please Damon. Please do not let him bury you again. Please kill him before he kills you. Please Damon. Please.”
I bared my teeth and roared as I closed the distance. “I hear you, kitten.
I hear you. He will never touch me again. He will never touch you again. I will not fall. Not while you breathe. Not while you scream my name.
The knife flashed. Darren swung it wide, aiming for my chest again. My wolf laughed inside me. Let him try. Let him think silver can finish us.
Break his arm. Make him drop it. Make him choke on his arrogance
I caught his wrist mid-swing, claws digging in, blood spilling hot between us.
“You should be rotting. You should be gone. You should have stayed under the dirt.*
I snarled back. 1 rose for her. I rose for the babies you wanted dead. I rose to burn you alive. And I will not stop until the floor drinks every drop of your blood.”
Behind me, Lyra screamed again, her vpice breaking. “Damon! Do not let go! Please, please Damon, you cannot die, you cannot leave me, please fight him!”
And every syllable made me stronger.
“You said you were immortal, Darren. But now l am standing here, and I can see your eyes, and I can smell your fear, and I can feel your chest breaking under my hand. Let us see your immortality now.”
My claws sank into him. I pushed deep, deeper, through muscle and bone, until the hot rush of blood poured over me. He screamed as he tried to push me back, his free hand slamming against my arm.
When I turned, I thought I would see only her, my kitten on the floor, crying and bleeding but alive. I thought the danger had ended when Darren’s heart dropped dead at my feet. I thought I could finally breathe. But the moment my eyes fell on her, I saw it. Time stopped
Tasha. That wretched girl. That cursed venom in my bloodline. She stood behind Lyra, her eyes wild, her teeth bared, and the knife was already sinking into my mate’s neck and belly. Blood filled her mouth and slipped out between her lips, and I swear the world split open inside me.
“Fuck you, Dad. If I can’t have you then no one will.” Then she dragged the blade across her own throat and killed herself. What the fuck just happened!Lyra’s body buckled, her eyes rolled back, and she began to fall.
“No!”
“Kitten,” I gasped, my forehead pressing against hers, my tears falling onto her skin, mixing with the blood that poured from her. “Stay with me. Do you hear me. Stay with me. Do not close your eyes. Do not let go of me. I crawled out of the earth for you. I bled for you. I killed for you.
You will not leave me now.”
“You are not leaving me, Lyra. Do you hear me. You are mine. You are my mate. You are my kitten. You will breathe because I command it.
You will live because I demand it. You will not close your eyes, not now, not ever.”
Her head lolled weakly against me, her lips parting as more blood slipped free, and I pressed my face against hers, rocking her like she was the only thing keeping me from madness because she was.
I killed the people that hurt her but they took her along with them.
