Zara said, "No need."
To her, he was nothing more than a pretty face she happened to pick up—a walking headache, really. She didn't want his gratitude. His thanks would only bring her more trouble.
Evan closed his hand around the cufflink. He glanced at his watch, then smiled. His eyes softened, carrying a trace of tenderness—almost affection.
He leaned in slightly, stepping closer to Zara. The cool scent of cedar from his body lingered around her, intoxicating like a quiet spell. Then, he slipped the cufflink into her hand.
"My savior," Evan murmured near her ear, his voice low and magnetic, "we'll meet again."
Expressionless, Zara grabbed his collar and pushed him away.
No matter how handsome he was, she wasn't about to let him whisper in her ear. After all, they barely knew each other.
Zara dragged Evan out of the bedroom, through the living room, opened the door, and tossed him out with a loud thud before slamming it shut. The whole motion was quick and clean.
Silence at last. Zara threw herself onto the couch, pulled a pillow into her arms, and lay down lazily.
Above her, the crystal chandelier sparkled brilliantly, surrounded by strings of smooth, lustrous pearls—luxury in its purest form.
The small apartment had been a gift—more like an insistence—from Zara's older teammates at Black Order.
Back then, when she learned that Charles and Vivian were her real parents and came to take her home, she'd made a clean break. She left Black Order and her teammates behind, choosing the Sterling family instead.
Her teammates had been reluctant to see her go. But for her happiness, they let her leave, forgave her stubbornness, and wished her a peaceful, ordinary life.
Still, they worried that if things ever went wrong with her family, she'd have nowhere to turn. So, they secretly bought her this small apartment in a wealthy neighborhood not far from the Sterling residence—just in case.
