The next day, while I was out job hunting, I got a call from the hospital.

“Lambert, your mother’s running a high fever and it’s not coming down. Her condition is serious. Please come back right away.”

I rushed over as fast as I could. By the time I arrived, Darleen had already been moved to a special care unit.

“Doctor, what’s going on with her now?”

The doctor’s voice was heavy. “Her situation is urgent. We need to start a new treatment right away. The money you paid before is almost used up. If you want us to continue, you’ll need to pay more. Please get the funds together as soon as possible.”

“I understand. Please go ahead with whatever she needs. I’ll find a way to cover it.”

I transferred everything I had left in my account to the hospital, terrified they might stop her treatment if I couldn’t pay. Years of savings, gone in a second.

But it still wasn’t enough. I tried calling Darleen’s relatives, hoping someone could lend me something, but everyone had their own problems. They all said no. I couldn’t blame them, and I didn’t push.

I had to find a job that paid quickly.

Soon after, Aaron messaged me. There was a bar looking for night shift waiters.

“You should try it,” he said. “If you get the job, you can work another gig during the day. I heard they give you bonuses for selling drinks, too.”

That sounded better than most options. At least there was some flexibility and the chance to make extra money.

“Alright, send me the address. I’ll go apply.”

I showed up for the interview, and the manager seemed pleased with my appearance. He hired me on the spot and ran through the basics.

“Just remember, the customer is always right. No matter what happens, you have to deal with it. They’re the reason you get paid.”

I’d worked in service before, so I got it. I nodded. “Understood. You can count on me.”

“Good. You’ll be on trial for two weeks. If things go well, your pay will go up.”
