“Besides, this is Claire’s money. I really can’t take it. There’s nothing between us, so there’s no reason for me to accept anything from her.”

I looked right at Claire. If she wanted to draw a line between us, then I’d make sure it was clear. No room for confusion.

Catherine burst out laughing, her voice echoing through the room. “Wow, you’ve actually got some backbone. That’s rare. I like it.”

She leaned forward, eyes sparkling with interest. “What’s your name? Why don’t you come work for me? I could use someone with a little fire.”

“If you stick with me, you’ll never have to worry about anything. Whatever you want, it’s yours.”

I already knew what kind of person Catherine was. Working for her might be tempting, but I also knew exactly what I’d be signing up for.

“Thanks, but I’m not looking to switch jobs right now.”

She didn’t look happy with my answer, but she managed a tight smile and tried to play it off.

“I’ve never met anyone in this line of work who isn’t strapped for cash,” she pointed out, her tone suddenly sharp. “Claire just said you keep losing jobs. Aren’t you worried you’ll lose this one too? It wouldn’t be hard for me to dig up everything about you. Does that not bother you?”

I met her gaze, then looked at Claire. People like them loved playing these games. Lifting people up, tearing them down, it was all just entertainment. If I didn’t play along, there was no way I was getting out of here unharmed.

“So, what do you want from me before you’ll let me go?”

The words tasted like defeat, but I forced them out.

Catherine’s smile widened. “Simple. You have two options. You can come with me, or you can drink every glass on this table and I’ll give you a hundred grand.”

She tilted her head, waiting. “Which is it? Me, or the money?”

Someone nearby chuckled. “Catherine, I’ve never seen you make such a bad deal. No matter what, you’re the one losing out.”
