Building Her Throne Burying My Heart (Claire) novel Chapter 26

The recruiter seemed almost frantic to close the deal. With a salary that high, it was obvious he’d be getting a hefty commission. But with my situation, if they found out, I’d be out on the street with nothing.

I held the test results in my hand, about to say something, when the recruiter quickly shoved the paper back into my pocket. “If I say you’re fine, you’re fine. Just sign already.”

His pushiness felt off. “But what if the boss finds out?” I asked.

He waved me off. “Boss said as long as you’re not disabled or about to drop dead, you’re good.”

The more he insisted, the more uneasy I felt. Still, I was out of options. I forced myself to sign the contract, hoping for the best.

The second my name hit the page, he snatched the contract and called out excitedly to someone in the back. “Claire, it’s done. He’s ready to go with you now.”

Claire? The name stopped me cold. I looked at the recruiter, stunned. “Claire? She’s the one who wants to hire me?”

Before he could answer, Claire came out from the back room. Her face was stone cold. “Yes. It’s me.”

I just stood there, frozen. It all made sense now. From the start, it was a setup. She must have known how desperate I was for cash. The high salary was just bait, and the recruiter never cared about my health—he just wanted me to sign. Everything had been planned.

I grabbed my things, ready to leave. “I’m sorry, I can’t do this. You’ll have to find someone else.”

The recruiter’s attitude flipped in an instant. He held up his copy of the contract. “Sorry, you already signed. There’s no backing out. If you try, you’ll owe a huge penalty.”
