Building Her Throne Burying My Heart (Claire) novel Chapter 50

Claire’s face went pale, then even darker, as if she couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She stared at me, completely thrown. How could I go this far for someone? What kind of woman could make me do something like this? Did I really love her that much?

In Claire’s eyes, I was just the heartless jerk who had let her down. She’d always thought I was incapable of caring about anyone. The idea that I’d risk everything for someone else seemed impossible to her. But now, faced with the truth, she realized how wrong she’d been. It wasn’t that I couldn’t care about anyone. I just hadn’t cared about her.

Her voice was cold and sharp. “So you’re ready to die for someone else? Fine. Give your life to me, then.”

“What are you talking about?” I asked.

“You want my help? Prove it. Show me what you’re willing to pay.”

Before I could answer, she grabbed the car keys right out of Laird’s hand. “Stand right here,” she said, her glare daring me to move. “If you take even one step, you’ll never see that money.”

She jumped in the car, backed it up fast, then leaned out the window. “Aren’t you supposed to be so tough? Catch this, then. If you can’t, just get lost.”

Everyone finally realized what she was about to do. Laird looked like he might pass out and ran straight for her. “Claire, please, calm down. Someone’s going to get hurt!”

She shot him a glare. “If you try to help him again, you can stand next to him.”

Laird knew there was no reasoning with her, so he stepped back, looking at me with a kind of sick worry. “Lambert, think about it. You know she’s furious. You’re just giving her a reason to destroy you. This is suicide.”

He was right, but I didn’t have a choice. Back in Cabinda, Claire had gone up against Catherine without flinching. There was nothing she wouldn’t do. Even if I tried something else, she’d find a way to ruin it.
