I gave an awkward little smile. “Daisy, if the money’s good, I can say a lot more nice things.”
Claire’s face fell even more. She looked like she couldn’t believe how fake my compliments were. She leaned in and muttered, “You can leave now.”
I grabbed my bag and left without another word, heading back out to wait. I sat down, pretending to flip through a magazine, but I kept sneaking glances through the glass at Claire and Daisy. They were still inside, going through dress after dress. Claire tried on so many, but she just couldn’t seem to settle on one.
Honestly, I thought she looked gorgeous in every single one. To me, she was beautiful no matter what she wore.
But the thought of her marrying Garrison made me feel sick. Could someone like him ever really make her happy? Would he ever treat her right? And what about me? What could I even offer her? I couldn’t afford a proper ring. Was I supposed to win her over with nothing but empty sweet talk?
I used to be so naive, dreaming about a future together when I was younger. But after everything I’d been through, I realized that sometimes, just getting by is all you can hope for.
I couldn’t give her a better life, and I couldn’t make up for my mistakes. I didn’t even have time to see if she’d ever find someone who was truly good to her.
Suddenly, my stomach twisted in pain, sharp and impossible to ignore. I dug out a pill and popped it into my mouth, getting ready to wash it down with some water. Just as I tilted my head back, I realized Claire was standing right in front of me, her eyes cold and sharp.
She watched me take the pill and asked, her voice icy, “What are you taking?”
I swallowed quickly, finishing the water. “Just cold medicine. You know, from when I got caught in the rain the other day.”
She didn’t seem to care at all, even after hearing I’d gotten sick because of her.
“If you’re not dead, you show up for work. Even if you break your leg, you crawl in.”
The word “dead” made my heart skip. It used to feel so far away. Now, it was always there, like a shadow, never letting me forget how close it was.
