Stuff like this happened all the time. We all covered for each other, no big deal. But when I dropped off the delivery and saw the company logo, my stomach dropped. It was Claire’s company.
I thought about calling the customer, asking them to come down and grab their food. They shot me down. So I sucked it up and headed for the twelfth floor, fingers crossed that I wouldn’t run into Claire. But the universe always has other plans.
I kept my head down, handed off the order, and tried to slip out as fast as I could. Of course, I ended up bumping into someone. Papers flew everywhere.
I started apologizing on instinct, crouching down to help pick everything up. “Sorry, I didn’t see you. Really, I’m sorry.”
The other person didn’t say anything. She just stood there with her arms crossed, listening to my voice, not even bothering to help. She watched me gather every single sheet off the floor. When I finally stood up, I realized who it was.
Claire.
I froze, every muscle in my body going stiff. “Sorry. These are your files.”
There was this awkward pause. I handed her the stack and practically sprinted for the hallway. I was about to hit the elevator button when I heard her voice behind me.
“Stop.”
I froze. The way she said it, there was no room for argument.
She marched over, eyes blazing. “I don’t want to see people like you in my company ever again.”
I met her gaze. If that’s what she wanted, fine. “Okay. I won’t take any more delivery orders here. You won’t see me again.”
“You’d better not. Or I’ll make sure you’re looking for a new job.”
I knew she had the power to get me fired, to make sure I never set foot here again. I clenched my hands. “Don’t worry. I mean it.”
