Claire got even angrier when she heard me laugh at myself.

When she first heard the news that the car that went off the cliff was hers, her heart nearly stopped. Her hand shook so badly she could barely hold her phone. She was terrified to keep listening, scared she might hear news about me... whether I was alive or dead. She kept going back and forth between love and hate, and it was eating her up inside.

“Is he dead?” That was what came out of her mouth, even though it wasn’t what she meant to ask.

“Claire, the patient is unconscious and has already been sent to the hospital. We don't know the details yet,” the officer told her. “We're still looking into the cause of the accident. If we find out anything, we’ll let you know.”

That was the only time Claire let herself breathe. “Okay, I got it.”

After that, she called me. She probably wanted to ask if I was alright, but the first thing she said was something sharp and cold.

When I saw her name pop up, I felt a split second of hope, but her words immediately made my heart freeze. Still, I had to act like nothing was wrong, no matter how awful I felt inside.

She must have picked up on my usual careless attitude, because she didn’t push further about my injuries. Instead, she went straight to the point.

“You sound just fine. Not exactly like someone who almost died. So, want to explain what happened?”

A wave of irony hit me.

Back then, whenever I said anything about “death,” she’d always tell me not to. “Don’t say that word, it’s unlucky,” she’d remind me. “Doesn’t matter who you’re talking about, just don’t. Okay?”

But now, it was the only thing she talked about.

“What do you want to know?” I said. “Why I crashed the car, or why I’m still alive?”

Claire went quiet for a second, then replied with a cold edge.

“Did you really go down the mountain to buy medicine, or were you just waiting for a chance to escape? All it takes is one road to get to the next city. Don’t tell me you never thought about it.”

Just like I thought.
