Claire stood in the doorway.

The air turned heavy, and for a second, nobody moved. The last time these two saw each other, they were best friends. Then they fought over me and stopped talking altogether.

Back then, Deanna knew what I was going through, but she couldn’t explain it to Claire. She tried to drop hints, like, “Maybe he’s got his reasons. Just try to stay calm…” But Claire couldn’t hear any of that. All she saw was betrayal. After their argument, their friendship just… ended.

No one expected their reunion to happen here, in my hospital room.

Claire was the first to speak. She and Deanna had known each other since they were kids, after all. “What are you doing here?”

Deanna stayed cool, like she always did. “I’m his doctor. Is that weird?”

As soon as she said it, Deanna realized something felt off. Why was Claire here? Did she know I was back? If she did, that probably meant she remembered what she used to say, that she’d pay me back a hundred times for what I’d done.

If Claire saw me like this now, what would she do?

Deanna’s tone shifted, cautious. “Why are you here, Claire?”

Claire hesitated for a moment. “Why do you think?”

She glanced my way, her stare sharp and unfriendly. Deanna noticed and felt her worst suspicions confirmed. She stepped in front of the door and lowered her voice. “You’re not here for revenge, are you? He’s sick. Maybe pick a better time.”
