If Curtis said what he really wanted to, it would’ve been too harsh, and if Harold collapsed from the shock, that was the last thing Curtis actually wanted to see.
“So now that the tough approach didn’t work, you’re trying moral guilt?” Adriana had no intention of being polite. This was the man who tried to hurt her unborn child, and ruin her ability to ever have more. With that kind of cruelty, he didn’t deserve her respect. “Denton’s been living rough all these years and he’s still perfectly alive at 19. ‘Letting them struggle‘ sounds dramatic. You want to talk about real harm? You tried to have my baby killed. That’s murder.”
Harold’s face instantly twisted in anger. “And who the hell do you think you are? You think you get a say in this house? You’re nothing, only here because Curtis spoils you!”
Adriana scoffed and stepped slightly behind Curtis, still scared, but not backing down. “Then why’d you call me here? Because you knew if I didn’t come, he wouldn’t either.”
“Curtis, this how you teach your woman to talk to her elders?” Harold snapped, glaring at him.
Curtis stayed calm. “You’re my grandfather. You raised me, and I owe you for that. But you didn’t raise her. You hurt her. The fact that she even agreed to come here shows how decent she is. And Grandpa, she’s my wife. Isn’t it only right that I stand by her?”
Harold slammed his hand on the table. “Great! Just great! Curtis, you’re really gonna toss aside your family for her?”
“You’re the one who tossed family aside first. If you hadn’t pulled those dirty tricks, maybe I’d already be a few months pregnant by now,” Adriana fired back.
If he wanted to use morality to guilt Curtis, she’d use the baby to hit back just as hard.
Harold’s face went pale with rage. He waved his hand furiously. “Get out! Just get out!”
“Oh, like we were dying to be here. You want respect? Try acting like a real elder. I’m an orphan, nobody ever taught me manners. But you? You’re Harborton’s big–name businessman. What’s your excuse?” Adriana muttered under her breath.
Harold nearly passed out from the fury.
“If you don’t divorce her, then don’t bother coming back to the Lincolns ever again!” he roared.
Curtis nodded. “Alright then. Take care of yourself, Grandpa, because I’m not coming back.”

That was his answer. He wasn’t getting a divorce and he wanted Harold to hear it loud and clear. “Besides, shouldn’t you be happy? If I don’t divorce her, Denton still has a shot at marrying Nicole.”
Harold froze for a second, a flicker of guilt flashing across his face. How did Curtis find out about that plan?
“Grandpa, before you accuse me of being ungrateful, maybe take a good hard look at yourself first.” With that, Curtis took Adriana’s hand and turned to leave.
Harold’s heart twisted a little. After all, Curtis was the grandson he had raised. “Curtis … I know you’re capable. I believe in you. But Denton and your father … They don’t have that kind of strength. They can’t survive on their own.”
Curtis let out a cold, mocking laugh, and walked out without looking back.
Harold stood there for a long moment, then finally made up his mind. He turned to Ernest beside him. “Call the Barton girl, Nicole. Tell her I want to meet.”
It was time to push Nicole and Denton together.
Time to start paving the road for Denton.
“Mr. Lincoln, Mr. Michael just called. He said he’s convinced Denton. They’ll bring him back to see you in the next day or two,” Ernest said.
A hint of joy flickered in Harold’s eyes, and he nodded. “Good, good. I want to meet that boy.”
He was his grandson, after all. Even if he hadn’t been raised in the family, the thought of him still brought some warmth.
And to be fair, Denton seemed like a good kid–smart, responsible. Juliet and Michael both said he got top grades in school, always sensible and mature. With Michael’s bad leg, and Juliet not being much help around the house, it had been Denton holding that little family together all these years.
If it weren’t for Denton, Michael probably would’ve starved years ago.
The son had been taking care of the father since he was a kid, he’d been forced to grow up too fast, and he’d done it well.
In the end, Juliet and Michael managed to convince Denton. He finally agreed to come to Harborton and meet Harold.
Family ties were still there, after all, and Michael was Harold’s only son. After thinking it over for a long time, Denton decided it was worth at least meeting the man once.
