The most crucial discovery she’d made was that her own assistant was one of Nathan’s spies. To throw them off, she’d had another trusted assistant impersonate her for a few days before secretly rejoining the group on the trip back. No one had noticed a thing.
Nathan didn’t want to give up. His face was a mask of humiliation as he continued to try, but it was no use. He remained completely limp.
He was shocked, mortified. Why was this happening? Had he overdone it with Joanna’s mother these past few days? Eaten too much of something? Was something medically wrong?
Wendy was getting tired of the charade. “Nathan, I’m tired,” she repeated, her tone now detached.
Nathan froze. He saw her expression return to normal and, after so many years of marriage, knew she had lost interest.
Defeated, he lay back down, his mind racing with panic.
“I… I’m tired too,” he mumbled.
Wendy closed her eyes, a cold smirk playing on her lips. Let’s see you try to get it up ever again.
After a moment, she said, “Nathan, your mother called asking for money again. Didn’t I have you give them ten thousand last month? They have food, clothes, a maid to look after them, and a new wardrobe tailored every season. Why do they suddenly need so much more?”
The whole family was a bunch of parasites.
“Oh, is that so? Well, the company lost the Ceryn Corp. contract, and we took a huge hit. This business trip was an attempt to mitigate the damage, but it wasn’t enough.” She sounded genuinely worried. “Nathan, if this continues, our family could go bankrupt. We haven’t had any standout designers in the past two years. The Griffith family dominates the market, and while our partnership with them brought in decent profits, business has been tough lately.”
Nathan’s eyes darted nervously. “Wendy, my small company is still dependent on yours, and its profits are modest at best.” It was his way of saying he didn’t have any money.
And it was true that business had become more difficult. But the Don family going bankrupt? He didn’t believe it. Their real estate assets alone were worth hundreds of millions.
Besides, it wouldn’t be long before the entire Don family fortune was his. He was sick of Wendy’s obsessive cleanliness. Around her, he always had to be perfectly put-together.
“Well,” Wendy said, “since profits are down, we’ll all have to tighten our belts. Is that okay?”
