A slow smile spread across Joanna’s face at the news. “That’s wonderful. There will be a generous bonus for all of you at the end of the year.”
“Thank you, ma’am. The Spencer Group’s stock has been unstable, falling steadily. The shareholders are in an uproar. Marshall Spencer is nothing but a spoiled rich kid; he doesn’t know the first thing about business,” Nora said smugly.
Joanna, however, was more cautious. “Nora, don’t underestimate him. He’s impossible to read. I did a thorough investigation on him before, but my plans failed because of Natalie. You all need to be extremely careful.”
“Understood, ma’am. We’ll be on guard.”
After hanging up, Joanna opened her door and went to see if Wendy had taken her medicine. She crept downstairs and saw her father watching Wendy drink a bowl of tonic. A knowing smile touched Joanna’s lips. So, Wendy was suspicious. But when had she started to doubt? The DNA test had reassured Joanna, but Wendy had changed.
Seeing Wendy finish the tonic, Joanna decided not to go down and returned to her room. She needed to research Mr. Wilson’s preferences for her next move.
After drinking the tonic, Wendy leaned back on the sofa, feigning weakness. “Nathan, what is in this? I feel weaker every time I drink it. My memory has been getting worse lately, too. I keep forgetting things.”
Nathan’s eyes flickered. The drug was working. He smiled reassuringly. “Wendy, you’ve been under so much stress with the company, working yourself to the bone. Once we get through this, a few days of rest will set you right. Don’t worry, I’m here for you.”
…
Natalie didn’t wake up until noon the next day. Her body felt heavy and limp. She tried to turn over, but her back ached. When she opened her eyes, the first thing she saw was Sebastian. He looked exhausted, as if he hadn’t slept at all, and was still wearing the same clothes from last night.
She frowned, her voice hoarse. “Why are you still here?”
Seeing her awake, Sebastian visibly relaxed. “You’re my wife. You’re in the hospital. Where else would I be?” His voice was just as raspy, but tinged with anger.
