Seeing that Wendy still hadn't come home, Nathan’s mother grew furious. "Nathan, how can you just sit there? Your wife hasn't been home in days. I bet she's out fooling around."
"I've been back for days and haven't seen her once! Does she have no respect for me? And what happened to this month's household allowance? It's just gone! I have plans to go shopping with my friends. What am I supposed to do without that ten thousand dollars?"
Nathan rubbed his throbbing temples. "Mom, the company is about to go bankrupt. Wendy is swamped at the office. She doesn't have time to look after you. Please, don't make things worse."
"But I'm her mother-in-law! No matter how busy she is, she should be here taking care of me. What time is it? Why isn't she home?" she screeched. "A woman's place is at home, supporting her husband and raising her children, not running around in public. Managing the company is your job. She's only supposed to help out of the goodness of her heart. Look at the mess we're in now!"
Nathan knew his own limitations. "Mom, do you really think I can manage a company that big? There's too much involved. Everyone knows I'm her husband, but no one gives me the time of day. They want a leader with real power. What do I have? Just stop adding to the chaos. I'll give you fifty thousand dollars. You can go shopping with your friends tomorrow."
Nathan was on edge. He'd been having some… performance issues lately and hadn't been with a woman in a while. He felt like he was going crazy. His memory was failing, too. He'd been about to get something, but after his mother's tirade, his mind was a complete blank.
Hearing the word "bankrupt" finally scared the old woman. For years, Wendy had been the reason the Scotts lived so comfortably, allowing her other children to enjoy a wealthy lifestyle as well. If Wendy went broke, what would happen to her? She and her husband received a hundred thousand dollars in spending money every month, a sum that made everyone back in their hometown green with envy. For years, the money had arrived on the first of the month like clockwork. And for years, she'd kept ten thousand for herself and sent the other ninety thousand to her precious grandson overseas to fund his startup. If that money stopped, how would she live?
The more she thought, the more terrified she became. "You can't let the company go under! If it does, what will happen to my grandson?"
Nathan finally snapped. "Mom, can you please just leave me alone? My company is under attack too! It's about to go bankrupt! Just stop talking, please!"
He had always been obedient, never daring to speak to his mother like that. The outburst stunned her.
She collapsed onto the floor, clutching her chest and wailing, "Oh, what have I done to deserve this? Even my own son is yelling at me!"
