"Congratulations," he said, his tone flat and indifferent.
Cynthia choked on his words, feeling a tight knot of frustration rise in her throat.
"Mr. Holloway, you might want to stop licking your lips so much," she replied.
Dominic glanced at her, brow furrowing in confusion.
She forced a smile, her voice biting. "I'm just worried you'll poison yourself if you keep doing it."
He knew perfectly well what was going on with Benedict, and still he had the nerve to congratulate her.
Cynthia took a deep breath to steady herself. If she hadn't found out about Benedict and Giselle before the wedding, every "congratulations" at tomorrow's ceremony from those in the know would've been laced with mockery, a private joke at her expense.
If she'd only discovered the truth after she was married, every well-wishing word would have become a knife twisting in her heart.
Thank God she'd found out in time, before anyone had the chance to plunge that blade.
The man beside her let out a low chuckle. Streetlights flashed in through the car windows as they drove, washing over his profile in fleeting gold. There was a sly smile tugging at his lips; he seemed to be in an unreasonably good mood.
"You already tried once a moment ago. Funny, you look perfectly fine to me," he teased.
Cynthia had almost forgotten about the embarrassing moment earlier, but with him bringing it up again, her cheeks burned hot.
"..."
She was at a loss for words.
In the rearview mirror, the driver wore an amused, almost motherly smile, the corners of his mouth twitching as he tried to suppress it.
Cynthia bit her own tongue in frustration, trying to vent her annoyance.
But Dominic wouldn't let it go. Sensing victory, he pressed on.
"What's the matter? Cat got your tongue, or did you really poison yourself?"
Cynthia: "..."
Just as the tension peaked, her phone rang again, mercifully rescuing her.
She glanced at the caller ID and hurried to answer.
"Sis?"
Juliet's voice came through, cool and detached.
