Called Off the Wedding, Left Him Bankrupt novel Chapter 107

The wedding ceremony began.

Father Benedict was called up to the stage by the officiant to say a few opening words. As soon as he finished, Lois followed him up, making it clear she wanted to speak as well.

Benedict frowned ever so slightly, a flicker of annoyance in his eyes, but when he saw Lois beaming at the crowd, he handed her the microphone anyway.

Lois took the mic, cleared her throat, and began to speak in the self-important tone she so often used.

"First, I want to thank and welcome everyone here today to celebrate the marriage of my son and his lovely bride. Before we begin, as the only elder of this family, I feel it's my duty to say a few words.

Cynthia, marrying Benedict is a blessing you must have earned in a past life. As his wife, I hope you'll be patient with him and take good care of our Benedict. Being a man out in the world isn't easy—try to keep your temper in check."

Benedict's face hardened, and he shot Lois a warning glare.

Every word out of her mouth seemed tailored to hit Cynthia's sore spots. He was terrified Cynthia would get upset and walk out then and there.

Lois dodged Benedict's attempt to grab the microphone, hurrying to add a few more lines.

"And Cynthia, I know all about what happened last night. Just because Benedict doesn't mind doesn't mean I have no opinion as his mother. If you take good care of him from now on, maybe—just maybe—I'll accept you as my daughter-in-law."

Benedict's expression turned icy. "Mom, what are you doing?"

A ripple of whispers spread through the guests as they took in Lois's speech. Everyone had noticed the bride's side of the hall was nearly empty—the seats reserved for Cynthia's family stood vacant.
