Called Off the Wedding, Left Him Bankrupt novel Chapter 127

"Juliet, I'm trying to have a serious conversation about you. Why are you dragging me into this? Dominic and I aren't even engaged anymore."

Cynthia's annoyance flashed in her eyes, and her grip unconsciously tightened.

Juliet's brow twitched. She shook Cynthia's hand off.

"If you're not willing to do it, then why bother pretending to give in?"

Cynthia's voice grew urgent. "Juliet…"

Juliet pressed her fingers to the bridge of her nose.

"Just go. Leave me alone."

It had already been a long day—she hadn't managed to sell the property, she'd had too much to drink, and exhaustion seeped through every bone. The chill she usually kept in check now radiated off her in waves.

But Cynthia didn't budge. "I want to work at the company. Give me a position."

Juliet's response was flat and immediate.

"We're not hiring."

Cynthia looked at her steadily, seeing right through her feigned indifference.

"You don't want me at Tremaine Holdings because you're trying to protect me, aren't you? The company's about to go under, and there's a mountain of debt you can't repay. Isn't that right?"

Juliet's expression didn't so much as flicker. She merely paged through the file in her hands, cool as ever.

"Where did you hear that nonsense? It's nothing but rumors."

Cynthia's gaze softened, a wounded look lingering as she studied her sister's beautiful but unyielding face.

"Dominic told me."

Juliet fell silent, and for the first time, the mask of aloofness cracked. She shut her eyes, slow and deliberate, to hide the turmoil threatening to show.

Cynthia, aching for her, moved behind and wrapped her arms around Juliet.

"I'm back now, Juliet. I'll help you. We'll get through this together."

"We'll pay off the bank first, then the Holloway family. Tremaine Holdings will survive. It has to."

Juliet's eyes opened. "We owe the Holloways?"
