When they left the hospital, Dominic had gone out of his way to have a wheelchair brought over for her.
"I can walk on my own," Cynthia protested, forcing a sheepish smile as the nurse wheeled it toward her. Sitting in that chair made her feel like she was some kind of invalid—which was seriously overkill.
Dominic's expression was unreadable. "There's a step at the entrance," he pointed out. "Are you sure you can manage it without being able to look down?"
Cynthia fell silent.
Dominic leaned in, voice low. "Or are you just looking for another excuse to fall into my arms?"
Even though he'd spoken quietly, the nurse and orderly standing nearby heard every word. Their faces lit up with knowing, mischievous smiles.
Cynthia bit her tongue, cheeks flushing, and in the end she gave in and sat down in the wheelchair.
Dominic took hold of the handles and pushed her out of the hospital.
When they reached the car, Cynthia wasted no time getting up. But the moment she tried to stand, pain shot through the muscles in her neck.
Dominic opened the passenger door for her.
Cynthia cradled her sore neck as she awkwardly eased herself into the seat, her movements slow and clumsy.
Dominic didn't rush her. He simply waited, patient as ever. Once she was finally settled, he didn't close the door right away. Instead, he leaned in through the open frame.
Cynthia's heart skipped. She shrank back, pressing herself against the seat.
"What… what are you doing?" she stammered.
Dominic's eyes glinted with something unreadable, a sly curve to his lips as he leaned closer. "What do you think?"
Every muscle in Cynthia's body tensed.
"Mr. Holloway, please. Don't joke around."
He arched an eyebrow and leaned just a little further in. Cynthia stared, wide-eyed and wary, but there wasn't a trace of fear in her gaze—just bracing defiance.
Suddenly, there was a click—the seatbelt locking into place.
Cynthia blinked, caught off guard. Dominic looked down at her, a smirk playing at the corners of his mouth. "Miss Tremaine, what exactly were you just imagining?"
She shook her head. "Nothing at all."
