Called Off the Wedding, Left Him Bankrupt novel Chapter 205

Benedict reached for the buttons on Cynthia’s blouse, his hands moving with nervous urgency. He glanced up, searching her face for a reaction.

At that exact moment, Cynthia’s fingers closed around a glass ashtray on the desk. Without hesitation, she swung it at his head with all the strength she could muster.

It happened in a matter of seconds. Blinding pain shot through Benedict’s skull, and his vision swam. Warm blood trickled down his forehead, dripping into his eye and staining his sight red.

He stared at Cynthia in stunned disbelief, unable to process what she’d just done. He’d never imagined she would strike him—let alone with such force.

The shock faded, replaced by a strange, almost relieved exhale. Maybe this was for the best. Maybe now, with her anger spent, she’d stop giving him the silent treatment.

He reached up to wipe the blood from the corner of his eye. Cynthia immediately raised a defensive arm, shrinking away.

Benedict froze, his hand in midair. Her instinctive reaction hit him like a punch to the gut.

“You think I’d hit you?” His voice was raw, wounded. He pushed her arm gently aside. “Cynthia, are you afraid of me?”

They’d been together for seven years, and he had never once laid a hand on her. Her fear now spoke of a broken trust—a chasm he hadn’t realized existed.

He couldn’t stop the words from tumbling out, as if saying them enough times would make her answer. “Do you really think I’d hurt you?”

Cynthia sat up, putting as much space as she could between them. The shock of his earlier actions—the words, the hands on her—had triggered her instinct to fight back. But now, as adrenaline faded and rational thought returned, she realized just how vast the difference in their strength was. If Benedict lost his temper and struck her, she wouldn’t stand a chance.
