Called Off the Wedding, Left Him Bankrupt novel Chapter 221

Cynthia couldn’t hide the flicker of disappointment and guilt in her eyes.

Dominic shot her a glance, then looked away, his voice calm as he addressed Lamont.

“When are you heading back to the city?”

Lamont checked his watch before replying quietly, “Tonight. Seymour Raynes is getting engaged. The family patriarch wants every Raynes descendant present. Tomorrow is the private family gathering, just relatives meeting each other. The actual engagement party for guests is after that.”

At the mention of Seymour’s name, Cynthia looked up, startled.

Seymour?

That name rang a bell. She remembered seeing a magazine in her sister’s study—one of those in-depth interviews. Seymour had been right there on the cover.

Could it really be him? The same man her sister once vowed she’d marry and no one else?

Seymour was the current head of the Raynes family, the one who’d clawed his way to the top through ruthless infighting with his uncles and cousins. People said he ruled with an iron fist—these days, none of his relatives dared cross him. He was, by all accounts, a formidable man.

Cynthia knew that Juliet Tremaine, her sister, had always admired strength and power. If it was Seymour who had once made Juliet lose her composure, it would make sense.

But then again, Seymour had been under constant scrutiny from his family for years. If he and Juliet had actually been involved, surely there would have been rumors—something would have leaked out.

Besides... for a man like Seymour, helping Juliet’s career would have been child’s play.

Cynthia frowned, puzzled, her mind swirling with questions.

Lamont was part of the Raynes family; maybe he would know something?

She parted her lips, about to ask, but before she could speak, Dominic, who’d been chatting idly with Lamont, turned his gaze on her. His tone was even as he said, “If you have any questions, ask me privately later.”
