Called Off the Wedding, Left Him Bankrupt novel Chapter 257

Once the office had settled back into quiet, Cynthia sat frozen in her chair, staring blankly at the document in her hands. The words blurred together, refusing to make any sense.

Normally, she could slip into work mode the moment business hours began, but today, she couldn’t focus on a single sentence. She just sat there, absentmindedly clutching the paperwork, so lost in thought she didn’t even notice Dominic approach.

It wasn’t until his strikingly handsome face suddenly filled her field of vision that she snapped back to reality, startled enough to quickly scoot her chair back and put some distance between them.

"Wait—you… Weren’t you going downstairs to negotiate the contract?"

Dominic watched her panic, a small, amused smile twitching at his lips. He pulled out the chair opposite her and sat down as if he owned the place.

"That was settled ages ago. Attorney Garfield will handle the rest."

Truth be told, he hadn’t needed to come by today at all. He was heading out to inspect a project site anyway, and on a whim, decided to tag along with Garfield upstairs.

For some reason, ever since she’d turned down his offer to drive her to work that morning—and after they’d parted ways in the parking garage—he’d had an odd urge to see her again.

Under Dominic’s intense gaze, Cynthia could only mutter a faint, "Oh." The office suddenly felt stiflingly warm, far hotter than usual, making her all the more flustered and at a loss for what to do.

Dominic, watching her bewilderment with growing amusement, leaned in and spoke slowly, his tone low and playfully ambiguous.

"I drank a little too much last night—some things are a blur. But I’m not the kind of guy who shirks responsibility. Since… well, whatever did or didn’t happen already happened, so…"

Cynthia’s face turned crimson. She rushed to cut him off.

"I was just talking nonsense. Nothing happened between us. You were a perfect gentleman, Mr. Holloway. Didn’t try anything inappropriate."

Except for that mark he’d left on her neck, he hadn’t crossed any real lines.

Dominic’s eyes dimmed, disappointment flickering across his face.

"So… you don’t need me to take responsibility?"

She shook her head emphatically. "Of course not! Nothing happened. Besides, you were drunk and I was sober—if anything had happened, it would’ve been entirely consensual. So there’s nothing for you to feel guilty about."

Dominic fell silent, the last glimmer in his eyes fading, replaced by his usual inscrutable expression.
