Called Off the Wedding, Left Him Bankrupt novel Chapter 260

As soon as they reached the private boarding gate, Cynthia felt a gentle warmth on the back of her hand.

Dominic’s palm lightly patted hers.

Cynthia glanced sideways, a flicker of confusion passing through her eyes, but she let go of his hand all the same.

The moment she released him, Dominic grabbed the handle of his suitcase, walking shoulder to shoulder with her.

Cynthia realized what he intended. Pressing her lips together, she could feel her heartbeat quicken and drop her gaze, forcing down the flutter in her chest. By the time she looked up again, her face was calm.

Once on the plane, Dominic slipped on his sleep mask and reclined in his seat to rest.

Cynthia sat quietly by his side, watching his peaceful, sleeping face. Before she realized it, she too drifted off.

Her dreams were a tangled mess.

She was seventeen again, caught in the crossfire of her parents’ bitter arguments. She could hear her mother’s muffled sobs the night she tried to take Cynthia away from the city.

Her mother had whispered, “Cynthia, if you stay here, you’ll just disappear in this family. Your sister is the heir your grandfather cares about; you’re nothing more than a pawn to be married off.”

She’d said, “What does it matter if you love him? Does he love you back? Can you ever compete with your sister? She’s so outstanding—no one will ever notice you in her shadow.”

Her mother cried, and Cynthia cried with her.

She remembered her mother tossing her secret diary—a notebook full of her teenage hopes—straight into the fireplace.

The flames burned high, lighting up Cynthia’s tear-streaked face in a feverish red glow.

A spark shot out of the fire, landing on the back of her hand, searing her skin and jolting her awake.

She opened her eyes to Dominic’s strikingly handsome face, and for a moment, her heart twisted sharply.

She glanced down and realized Dominic was holding her hand tightly. The pain from that old burn on her hand felt suddenly more vivid.
